A serious-looking security minister strides through the corridors of Hong Kong’s government headquarters and assigns an “extraordinary mission” to an incredibly furry colleague – a bear in a blue windbreaker with the city’s coat of arms.

Receiving a mobile phone from the Minister Chris Tang Ping-keungThe bear, the security bureau’s mascot, learns that his mission is to set up an official account on Douyin, the most downloaded video-sharing platform in mainland China, according to a short film released on Monday.

Tang and two of his aides – Undersecretary Michael Cheuk Hau-yip and Permanent Secretary for Security Patrick Li Pak-chuen – showed off their acting skills in the one-minute video titled “Battle of Douyin” on the popular platform known for its comedic content.

The Douyin account, which goes by the Chinese name Hong Kong Security Bureau, quickly gained more than 71,000 fans and 163,000 likes by 7 p.m. Monday, a day after its release. The video received about 101,000 likes during the same period.

In the parody video, Tang tells his employees: “In extraordinary times, use extraordinary methods.”

“I understand,” Li replies. Then the camera pans to Cheuk, who says, “To do this well, we need at least four people.”

Tang points to a still-unseen fourth member, who soon turns out to be the Security Bear, whose “extraordinary task” is to open the office’s official Douyin account.

Douyin is the office’s eighth social media account, Tang said. The security minister himself has accounts on Facebook, Instagram, Xiaohongshu – a Chinese social media platform similar to Instagram – and Weibo, among others.

The Post has reached out to the office for further comment.
