Russia summons US envoy over Crimea attack – DW – 24.06.2024

The Russian Foreign Ministry summoned US Ambassador Lynne Tracy on Monday following a missile attack on Crimea on Sunday that killed four people, including two children.

Tracy was told by the State Department that Washington “bears the same responsibility for this atrocity as the Kiev regime” and that there would be consequences.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov described the attack on Sevastopol as “barbaric” and accused Washington of “killing Russian children”.

“The involvement of the United States, the direct involvement, as a result of which Russian civilians are being killed, cannot be without consequences,” Peskov told reporters. “Time will tell what they will be,” he said.

Russia said Sunday’s attacks on Sevastopol were carried out with US ATACMS missiles; four of them were intercepted.

The Russian Foreign Ministry said the cause of death was the explosion of the fragmentation warhead of the fifth missile.

Russia occupied the Ukrainian province of Crimea in 2014 and subsequently annexed it in an illegal move that was not recognized by the international community.

The head of the Ukrainian President’s office, Andriy Yermak, wrote on Telegram on Monday: “Crimea is Ukraine.”

“Russia must leave the peninsula. Its army and its military facilities there must cease to exist.”
