Elon Musk believes pop singer Justin Timberlake could have avoided drunk driving charges if he had driven a Tesla rather than a BMW – Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA)

Tesla Inc. TSL CEO Elon Musk joined Justin TimberlakeThe discussion about drunk driving continued with the statement that the pop singer would not have been arrested if he had driven a Tesla with the driver assistance function activated and not a BMW.

What happened: Timberlake was arrested on June 18 in Sag Harbor, New York, for drunk driving after he ran a stop sign and failed to maintain his lane. Reuters reported.

The pop singer with popular songs such as “Can’t Stop the Feeling!” and “Mirrors” was arraigned and released in Sag Harbor Village Court. He was reportedly driving a gray 2025 BMW.

Timberlake is scheduled to perform at Madison Square Garden in New York on Tuesday and Wednesday before traveling to Boston as part of his “The Forget Tomorrow World Tour.”

According to the report, Tesla enthusiast Omar Qaziwho is known by the username Complete Mars cataloguewrote to X that a Tesla would have prevented the singer from running a stop sign or red light, thus helping him avoid prosecution. Musk agreed with the user with a quick “True.”

Why it is important: Tesla’s advanced driver assistance technology for fully autonomous driving (FSD) is intended to enable autonomous vehicles in due course, but for now it requires active supervision, with the driver keeping their hands on the wheel and keeping an eye on the surroundings, including other road users.

Contrary to Musk’s opinion, Tesla advises drivers in its owner’s manual to “never make assumptions” about when and where the technology will stop or proceed at an intersection or lane marking.

“In rare cases, fully autonomous driving (supervised) may not properly brake, stop, or regain control at a stop sign or traffic light. You can assist the system by lightly pressing the accelerator pedal, or you can override fully autonomous driving (supervised) at any time,” the warning states.

However, Musk was previously known for overestimating the performance of his companies’ products and admitted to being a “pathological optimist.”
