Nick Gordon’s hit helps the Marlins win the series against AL West leader Seattle

MIAMI – Nick Gordon and Jesús Sánchez hit home runs as the Miami Marlins defeated the Seattle Mariners 6-4 on Sunday.

Jazz Chisholm Jr. had two hits and an RBI for the Marlins, who won the three-game series against the AL West-leading Mariners.

AJ Puk (1-8) relieved Marlins starter Kyle Tyler to start the fifth inning and threw two perfect innings. Tyler allowed two runs and three hits in the first four innings.

Marlins manager Skip Schumaker said the Mariners’ third turn against Tyler in the fifth inning played a role in getting him up after 65 pitches and a 6-2 lead.

“We had the advantage of having three left-handed hitters in the bullpen,” Schumaker said. “And when you’re ahead, you play to your strengths. Our strength is our bullpen. He did enough to put us in a position to win, and our offense put us in position, then we play to our strengths.”

The Mariners pulled within 6-4 in the seventh inning on Ryan Bliss’ RBI groundout against Huascar Brazoban and JP Crawford’s run-scoring single against Andrew Nardi.

Marlins closer Tanner Scott allowed a leadoff single to Mitch Garver and walked Cal Raleigh in the ninth inning. Bliss flew out to medium center and Crawford struck out before Dylan Moore hit a single to right, loading the bases. Miami second baseman Otto López leapt up and caught Julio Rodriguez’s line drive for the final out and Scott’s ninth save.

Tyler, 27, was making his first major league appearance, being optioned from Triple-A Jacksonville after Sunday’s scheduled starter, Braxton Garrett, went on the injured list with a strained left forearm flexor. Tyler made one appearance as a reliever for Miami in a previous call-up on April 26.

Tyler used a perfect opening inning as motivation for the rest of his performance.

“That was incredible,” Tyler said. “Just knowing that this lineup is very dangerous, they can swing the bat really well and it feels good to score three points and lose three points.”

Seattle (45-35) fell to 2-4 on its nine-game road trip and 18-23 away.

“The consistency on the road just hasn’t been there,” Mariners manager Scott Servais said. “There are still a lot of games left. There will be ups and downs throughout the season. This trip has been a struggle for us. We have to put that behind us and then get to Tampa.”

Gordon’s three-run home run against Mariners starter Bryce Miller capped the four-run first. Jake Burger put Miami on the scoreboard with an RBI single.

“Honestly, I just wanted to get a ball I could hit,” Gordon said of his approach. “I had a good swing, didn’t think too much.”

Chisholm’s one-run single in the second made the game 5-0.

“We know how hard it is to play from behind, and when you get that early in the game, it’s hard to catch up,” Chisholm said. “They have one of the best rotations in the league, and we’ve got to get on them early and get into their bullpen.”

Sánchez hit a solo hit against Miller (6-6) in the third inning. Sánchez’s 429-footer landed in the right-center field seats and was his seventh home run.

Seattle narrowed the gap in the fourth inning with Luke Raley’s ninth home run, a two-run shot.

Miller allowed six runs and six hits and struck out three players in four innings.
