Scotland – Hungary 0:1: Magyarok strikes very late after terrible injury

Kevin Csoboth’s goal in the 10th minute of added time gave Hungary a memorable victory over Scotland at EURO 2024 in a game that will otherwise be remembered for a horrific collision that resulted in Hungarian Barnabas Varga being stretchered off the pitch.

Scotland’s late attack led to a desperate defensive effort that led to a vicious Hungarian counterattack. Csoboth inside-footed his late entry into the box, took off his shirt and held up Varga’s number 19 shirt.

Both teams needed a win to advance to the knockout rounds, but that was secondary for a while. Vargas scary injury in the 69th minute.

Varga struggled for a cross and landed shaking on the turf after colliding with an attempted shot by Scottish goalkeeper Angus Gunn. Scottish full-back Anthony Ralston was also shaken.

For Hungary, the three points are their only ones in the group stage but give the team hope of qualifying as third, while Scotland finish bottom of the group and go home with just a single point from three games.

Germany drew with Switzerland and won the group with seven points, while the Swiss took five points and advanced to the next round.

Scotland team news, focus

Kieran Tierney is out for the rest of the competition after suffering a hamstring injury against Switzerland. Scott McKenna is likely to replace Tierney and they could move to a flat back four as Tierney’s unique skills allowed them to field their preferred three-line defence system. Che Adams is likely to start up front again but Lawrence Shankland pushes him into the starting line-up while the big dilemma for Steve Clarke will be how attacking he is in midfield. It is likely that Scotland will stay in the game and then go all out in the second half.

Hungary: Team news, focus

They have absolutely nothing to lose and Hungary looked dangerous at times against Germany last time out. Sallai and Szoboszlai will be the main strikers and Gazdag and Adam could come in as substitutes if Hungary are all about winning.

The game looks set to be an open and entertaining one as both teams need to win to keep their hopes of staying in the tournament alive.
