Teenager allegedly arrested in connection with shooting of retired CPD officer

CHICAGO – A teenager has reportedly been in police custody since Sunday evening in connection with the killing of a retired CPD officer and bomb technician who was gunned down in the city’s Garfield Park neighborhood Thursday morning.

No charges have yet been brought against the 16-year-old boy; it is assumed that he was reported by his mother.

WGN-TV crews filmed the moment one of the two people believed to be responsible for the murder of retired CPD officer Larry Neuman was led into the West Harrison Street police station.

The turning point in the case came just hours after those who loved Neuman marched in mourning through his neighborhood to remember the Marine who served his country, the officer who loved this city and the pastor whose congregation meant everything to him.

“When you see a person like that staying in the neighborhood when they don’t have to, they really care about the neighborhood and the people there,” said Chicago Police Superintendent Larry Snelling.

Neuman was outside his house working in his yard on Thursday when he was shot. He retired in 2010 after working for the CPD for 28 years. He even worked for a time as an explosives expert for the TSA.

The former police officer’s death sparked a manhunt after police released surveillance footage of the suspects.

“You can’t call yourself a man because you carry a gun. You can’t call yourself a man because you robbed somebody. That doesn’t make you a great person. It makes you a criminal, an armed robber. If you shoot somebody, that makes you a murderer,” Snelling said.

Those present hoped that the suspects would come forward. Their prayers were partially answered on Sunday evening. Neuman added that they would work to ensure that his death was not in vain.

“We are not here today just to pray and do nothing,” said Pastor Paul Sims of St. Michael Missionary Baptist Church. “It is time for change, it is time for action.”

Details of the charges against the teenager are expected to be released on Monday.
