Joost Klein hints at the return of the Eurovision Song Contest 2025 at Pinkpop

This weekend Joost Klein had the crowd at Pinkpop – one of the biggest pop festivals in the Netherlands – under his spell. And not just when he sang “Europapa”. A slip of the tongue at the festival – coupled with the Frisian-born singer updating his social media profiles – has left everyone wondering whether Joost will return to the Eurovision Song Contest 2025 on behalf of the Netherlands.

The Netherlands has not yet officially announced its participation in the Swiss Song Contest. The Benelux country is usually one of the first countries to confirm its participation. In recent years, Dutch broadcaster AVROTROS has already received songs as part of its internal selection process. However, after Joost Klein became the first participant ever to be disqualified from the contest, AVROTROS has expressed its concerns.

Earlier this month, the broadcaster made it clear that it wanted a comprehensive and “truly independent” investigation into the recent Eurovision Song Contest – and structural changes in the organization of the event. Until then, its participation will continue to be “considered.”

Joost has toured the world since the grand finale, which he had to miss – from Canada to the Netherlands. Announced as the headliner for Pinkpop, Joost took the stage in front of an excited crowd of festival-goers. During his performance, he said to the audience: “Why the hell not, 2025?” This strongly suggests that he wants to compete in the song contest again. “Joost Klein 2025” appeared on the LED screen.

In addition to performing “Europapa,” Joost also premiered “The Bird Song” – another option he had for the Eurovision Song Contest 2024.

The Dutch star fuelled these rumours of a return on Sunday afternoon when he changed both his Instagram bio and the name of his broadcasting channel from Eurovision Song Contest 2024 To Eurovision 2025.

Before being crowned the Dutch hopeful in Malmö, Joost used the same channel to promote his Eurovision candidacy. The channel and social media campaign were one of the driving forces behind the Eurovision 2024 star actually being able to take part in the song contest.

If AVROTROS were to participate in Switzerland next year, it wouldn’t be so surprising if they chose Joost. After all, in 2021, when Jeangu Macrooy was deprived of the opportunity to participate in the Eurovision Song Contest due to the pandemic, the broadcaster was one of the first to reselect its 2020 participant.
