Alpharetta welcomes Maggie Rogers on the “Don’t Forget Me” tour

Following the release of her third studio album, Don’t Forget Me, Maggie Rogers kicked off her eponymous tour in early May. She headed to Alpharetta to play the Ameris Bank Amphitheatre on June 11 with opening act The Japanese House.

Rogers performed a collection of songs from all of her previous projects, including the infamous “Heard It In A Past Life,” which launched her rise to fame.

She opened the set with the first four songs from “Don’t Forget Me”: “It Was Coming All Along”, “Drunk”, “So Sick Of Dreaming” (the album’s first single) and “The Kill”.

“The Kill” tells the story of a toxic relationship. The song’s chorus switches possessive pronouns each time, emphasizing the back-and-forth nature of the relationship. Rogers told the audience that one group had signs with “you,” “I,” and “we” to indicate the correct pronouns, but they weren’t in the right order. The audience laughed, as did Rogers.

This portion of her show was filled with the dynamic energy of the crowd and of Rogers herself. Some of her newer songs are folk-inspired, reflecting her roots in the Maryland suburbs where she grew up. Some of her older songs can be heard on her compilation album, Notes from the Archive: Recordings 2011-2016.

Many parts of her performance were reminiscent of a young Taylor Swift. Her blonde hair, black dress and acoustic guitar resembled Swift during her “Speak Now” tour.

She then played songs from “Surrender,” including “Anywhere With You,” “Shatter,” and “That’s Where I Am.”

Rogers’ vocals shined throughout her performance. Many of her songs ended with long riffs or high notes, and she hit the right note on each one. Her voice is highly underrated in the indie world.

She ended up performing the famous “Alaska,” albeit an acoustic version that probably disappointed some people. This song launched her career with the famous Pharrell reaction video from her NYU class.

Although she played “Alaska” acoustically, she brought some synths and electronic beats to “Fallingwater” and “Light On” (naturally, the phone lights went on during this song). She closed the set with “That’s Where I Am.”

One major part of her live shows that has changed over the years is her dancing. During her “Heard It In A Past Life” era, Rogers danced across the stage in a unique, fluid way. Although she did dance during this show, it was nothing like her old dancing.

Rogers and her band left the stage, but soon returned to play their encore song, “Don’t Forget Me.” It’s the last song on their album, so it was fitting.

She finished with a cover of Bonnie Raitt’s “I Can’t Make You Love Me.” Only her voice and a piano could be heard: a beautiful end to her set.
