Sha’Carri Richardson thanks self-love for the Olympics in Paris

Personal growth and “a better understanding of myself” drive Sha’Carri Richardson to her first Olympic Games.

At the US track trials this weekend, the 24-year-old Texan not only secured her ticket for Paris 2024, but also made a statement against her competitors in the 100 meters.

With a time of 10.71 in Eugene, she is the fastest woman in the world this year.

There was a hug for “Big Momma” – her grandmother Betty Harp, who sat trackside and raised Richardson along with the sprinter’s aunt, Shayaria, who was also her first coach. This was a true moment of redemption for all to enjoy.

Three years ago, her victory at the trials secured her a place at the Olympic Games in Tokyo, but this was revoked just a few days later when a positive marijuana test earned her a one-month ban.

For Richardson, it was a double blow. She later explained that she smoked marijuana to cope after learning of her biological mother’s death from a reporter, and apologized for not knowing “how to control my emotions.”

At the press conference after the race on Saturday, she spoke to the media again, this time without remorse.

“Over the past three years, I have simply developed a better understanding of myself,” explained the reigning world champion.

“A deeper respect and appreciation for my talent for the sport and my responsibility towards the people who believe in me and support me.

“I feel like all of these components have helped me grow and will continue to help me grow into the young lady that God predestined and blessed me to be.”

Sponsors are all over her and Richardson’s global fan base is also growing quickly. She hasn’t been to an Olympic Games yet, but already has over 3 million followers on Instagram.

Only two athletes have more of it: the German Alica Schmidt, who is considered the “Sexiest Athlete in the World”, and the Indian gold medalist and javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra.

In a recent NBC commercial, Richardson got her nails done by Cardi B, a fellow black-out bisexual woman. “I’m dying to meet you, and I’m dying to talk to you,” the Grammy-winning rapper says.

Richardson is convinced that she will qualify for Paris and personally invites her to watch her compete in July. Cardi B replies: “I’m just coming for you… and shopping.”

A budding friendship develops there, but Richardson’s current relationship status is unclear.

After winning the Trials in 2021 with bright orange hair, she said her friend chose the color – but a year later, Jamaican hurdler Janeek Brown said in a podcast that they had split up.

In an Instagram story, Richardson subsequently publicly admitted that they had been together.

More recently, she has been linked to fellow US sprinter Christian Coleman, who heaped praise on her at a press conference in April following the Diamond League meet in Xiamen, China, where both won medals.

Coleman will compete in the 100-meter final at Hayward Field on Sunday and hopes to secure his place in Paris.

Regardless, Richardson is poised to single-handedly inspire a generation.

“I would say the message I’m sending is to believe in yourself no matter what,” she was quoted as saying by AP after completing her work over the weekend.

“You want to stay rooted in yourself. Stay rooted in yourself and your hard work.”
