Jannik Sinner moves to big club in Halle

Jannik Sinner moves to big club in Halle

First grass title of his career, fourth final won in as many matches in 2024, second tennis player after Roger Federer to become world number one and win the tournament in Halle. Jannik Sinner could not have had better preparation for the prestigious Wimbledon event: the South Tyrolean had to beat his best friend on the tour, Hubert Hurkacz, to win the trophy of the German event.

This was certainly an emotionally very special challenge for both of them, as they had started the week by playing doubles together (which was nothing new for them): their wish was of course to compete in the final again, and we have finally achieved that.

The first to experience difficulties was Hurkacz, who had to fend off a treacherous break point in the third game before holding his serve. Sinner had to do the same in the next game (with a straight line that is difficult to contrast) after hitting the net with a smash.

The two players then played “on serve” without giving their opponents another chance. The tiebreak, quite obviously, could only be drawn: the decisive blow came from the native of Innichen, who won a point in response to the 8:8 and then finished with his pole (10:8).

In the second set, the Pole Hubi Hurkacz had problems, especially in the first service game, and had to fend off two break points in a row right at the start. The Italian was very solid. No chance of a break, both had to settle for another tiebreak.

This time, Jannik Sinner did not need the advantages to prevail and put the file away for good (7-2). Only one week left to frame this year 2024.

Jannik Sinner is the world number one after Roland Garros, a tournament where he reached the semifinals and the top of the men’s rankings for the first time in his career, becoming the first player from his country to top the ATP rankings on this scale.
