Animal lovers and beer fans came together this weekend for a good cause.

To cap off their spectacular 6-year anniversary, Wax Wings Brewing Company hosted an adoption event on Sunday in partnership with the SPCA of Southwest Michigan.

Previously, the Kalamazoo-based brewery had brewed a specialty beer called “For the Dogs,” a hazy IPA with New Zealand hops, said TJ Waldofsky, partner at Wax Wings and director of Chaos.

Whether the beer is served on tap or in cans with four different labels, a portion of the proceeds from beer sales are expected to be donated to the SPCA of Southwest Michigan, Waldofsky told News Channel 3.

“We’re trying to adopt some dogs, and we brewed this great beer,” Waldofsky said. “It’s our favorite event on the anniversary weekend.”

For Katie Timber, executive director of the Southwest Michigan SPCA, the fundraiser was not only a treat for animal and beer lovers, but also helped the shelter as veterinary costs remain high.

“The cost of shelters is exceptionally high,” Timber said. “It’s higher than it’s ever been, so it’s events like this that really help get the animals out there, get them adopted and raise money.”

She continued, “Veterinary care has increased across the country. According to a Forbes study, 67% of pet owners can’t actually afford veterinary care. That’s why we’ve set up a food bank to help people who are struggling to keep their pets. Food is running out at a rapid pace. Anything like an open bag of food or towels really helps.”

Following Sunday’s celebration, Wax Wings specialty beers are expected to be available for purchase at the brewery while supplies last.
