Death in custody: Autopsy finds injury marks on man’s body | News from India

AGRA: The autopsy of a Dalit prisoner who died in custody has revealed severe injuries, shocking the authorities in Firozabad and raising serious concerns about the conduct of the police and prison. Aakash Kumar, 28, of Nagla Pachiya, was arrested by the police on suspicion of bike theft last Monday and sent to jail on Wednesday. Just 40 hours later, he was dead.

His autopsy, conducted by three doctors, found 14 serious injuries on his body. These included a bruise around his left eye and bruises on his neck, arms, thighs, shoulder blade region, buttocks and lower back. Blood was also oozing from his nose. The cause of death was given as “coma due to head injury before death.”

Further details indicated a “bluish bruise on the upper eyelid and conjunctiva of his left eye.” Signs of injury were noted on the right side of his neck and on his right upper arm near his shoulder. A painful swelling was observed behind his right elbow, accompanied by abrasions.

Other injuries included swelling on the man’s right arm, wrist, buttocks and right hand. A bruise was found on the front of his right thigh, while swelling was observed on the outside of his left thigh. And “an abrasion measuring 17 x 16 cm over the left shoulder blade region.”

While the jail administration claimed that Aakash died of illness, the post-mortem report contradicted this and revealed the extent of his injuries. According to sources, conflicting medical reports from the district hospital and the district jail have raised doubts about their accuracy. The South police station, which sent Aakash to jail, claimed that he was perfectly healthy as per the district hospital report. However, a medical examination at the jail soon after his arrival revealed a head injury, as noted by the jail doctor.

SP (jail) AK Singh declined to comment on the hospital report. “Whoever is found guilty will be punished,” he said. Firozabad SSP Saurabh Dixit said, “After due process, Aakash Kumar was taken for a medical examination. He was found healthy and had no injuries. He was produced before the magistrate and sent to jail as per the court’s orders.”

Following the violence, the police filed two charges against 40 named and 75 unidentified persons.
