College World Series 2024 live scores: Baseball updates, results and highlights from Tennessee vs. Texas A&M Game 2

Breathe in and out, Texas A&M fans.

Game 1 was a rollercoaster ride for the Aggies in their first appearance in the College World Series finals. What looked like a runaway victory at the end became even more exciting later on when the Volunteers hit two home runs in the seventh inning, forcing the Aggies to turn to relief ace Evan Aschenbeck to complete the 9-5 victory.

The bullpen may have been more challenged than coach Jim Schlossnagle had hoped in a game in which the Aggies led by seven runs at one point. But a win is a win, and on Saturday the Aggies were one win away from claiming the team’s first national championship.

Winning Game 2 won’t be easy, even though Texas A&M is the game’s home team. Ace Ryan Prager and standout reliever Josh Stewart are both almost certainly unavailable. Aschenbeck threw 46 pitches in his 2.2 innings, and that could pose a decision for Schlossnagle about his availability.

On the other hand, the Volunteers face a similar challenge, having used six pitchers in the loss. Their lineup has as many stars as any other college baseball team, but the pitchers will have to step up to appease Texas A&M’s nine players, who are getting better with each game in Omaha.

The Sporting News is following live updates from Sunday’s game between the Volunteers and Aggies, Game 2 of the College World Series finals. Below, find highlights and more as two of college baseball’s top clubs try to move one step closer to the national title.

(All times Eastern Time)

15:42: Two consecutive strikeouts start the fifth when Dreiling swings a 99 mph fastball. That’s six strikeouts for Cortez.

15:41: Amick commits four fouls in a row in a nine-pitch at-bat, but ultimately is unable to control his swing on a slider off the plate, earning a strikeout.

15:35 End of the fourth: Burton hits a comebacker to Beam, who throws the ball to first base to end the inning. He has thrown 63 pitches in four innings.

15:34: Burke makes an impressive dive to catch a sharp grounder from Schott. He throws it to second base and catches LaViolette on the fielder’s choice.

15:33: Appel flies into shallow left field for the first out.

15:31: LaViolette plays a breaking ball, but it doesn’t quite make it to the outer edge of the zone.

15:26 End of top fourth: Another missed opportunity for the Volunteers as Burke is thrown out on a checked swing grounder to second base. Tennessee is 0 of 13 hitting with runners on base and 0 of 5 with runners in scoring position today.

15:24: Moore walks four pitches, the fourth walk Cortez has allowed today. Burke will bat with the bases loaded and two bases out.

15:22: Stark hits a slider that swings down and away for the second out. Back to the top of the order, Moore comes to bat.

15:21: Three walks for Cortez as Peebles fires a slider that doesn’t quite hit the outside of the zone on a 3-2 count, drawing the walk. Runners on first and second base for Stark.

15:19: Curley flies out to the right.

15:17: Stop if you’ve heard this before: The Volunteers have a leadoff baserunner. Tears hits a single through the right side of the infield.

15:13 End of third: Grahovac fans on a slider that earns Beam’s seventh strikeout. He’s been providing some strong pitching for the Volunteers through the first three innings so far.

15:12: Beam gets his sixth strikeout of the day when Chestnut is caught staring at a slider that hits the low outside corner.

15:10: Great play by Beam to first on a pickoff, and after a review, Kent is ruled out.

15:08: Kent stays hot and hits a 2-1 fastball to shallow right field for a single. The ball had an exit velocity of 58.5 mph.

15:05 End of upper third: Another masterful strikeout from Cortez as he gets Ensley to chase a slider down and away for the three-pitch punchout.

15:03: Cortez catches the comebacker back to the mound and throws to the second baseman. The throw goes a little too far to the left, but Camarillo keeps his foot on the bag to give the fielder the option, although he has no chance to make the double play.

15:01: Amick watches as 101 paints the outside edge of the zone for a strikeout.

14:59: A five-pitch walk for Burke opens the third inning for Tennessee.

14:56 End second: Dirty work from Beam, who is likely to be selected early in the 2024 MLB Draft, as he shuts out the side and ends the stretch with a swinging strikeout of Camarillo on a 96-mph heater.

14:55: Get two strikeouts in a row when Beam throws a slider into the zone to catch Sorrell watching. He already has four strikeouts today.

14:53: Beam gets Burton to swing down and away on a breaker, getting the strikeout.

14:49 End of top second: Moore throws a nasty 101 mph fastball, but it’s deflected for a groundout to second base, ending the inning. Another missed scoring opportunity for the Volunteers.

14:47: The Aggies should have been out of the inning. Instead, a groundout from Stark to shortstop turned into a deep throw that Burton couldn’t catch. The bases are now loaded for Moore, Tennessee’s best hitter.

14:46: A four-pitch walk for Peebles puts Tennessee runners on first and second base with two outs.

14:44: Curley takes a 3-2 slider and lifts it to the middle, where Chestnut takes it in his hands.

14:41: Tears lunges to earth with a 99 mph fastball and gets the first out.

14:38: One inning and one batter is all Badmaev will have today. Chris Cortez comes in to pitch for the Aggies.

2:36 p.m.: Ensley hits a base hit to center to open the second inning, two consecutive innings in which the Volunteers had a leadoff single.

14:34 End of the first: Beam catches Schott looking for a strikeout to end the first inning.

2.30: Appel hits a 94 mph two-seamer.

2:29 p.m., Texas A&M score: That’s how to break out of a losing streak. LaViollete hits a fastball from Beam 415 feet into the right-field seats. The ball leaves the bat at 111.5 miles per hour. And for the second game in a row, a first-inning home run gives Texas A&M an early lead. Texas A&M 1, Tennessee 0

14:26: The bottom half of the first inning begins with an eight-pitch at-bat that ends with Grahovac popping out to second base.

14:19 End top first: Dreiling hits a changeup from Badmaev and misses, resulting in a strikeout and ending the inning. The Volunteers were 2 of 13 with runners in scoring position in Saturday’s loss and are already 0 of 1 starting today.

14:16: The Volunteers let Moore start from first base with a 3-2 count and he successfully steals second base while Amick goes down and looks for a breaker that bends right into the middle of the zone. Dreiling will come to bat with a runner in scoring position and two outs.

2:12 p.m.: Burke hits a liner to left, but Sorrell plays it perfectly in front of the warning track so he can catch the ball.

2:11 p.m.: Good start for Tennessee as Moore hits a breaker from Badmaev back to center and scores a leadoff single.

14:10: The first pitch of the game from Badmaev is a ball that goes down and away to Moore.

14 o’clock: It’s just time for Game 2. Texas A&M can win it all. Tennessee must win to keep its championship dreams alive.

13.45: In perhaps the most important battle of the weekend, Texas A&M overtook Tennessee to take the lead in the Jell-O Shot Challenge. The Volunteers held the lead for most of the contest, but a win in Game 1 appears to have helped the Aggies take the lead.
