Resident doctors in Telangana begin indefinite strike from Monday

Junior doctors in Telangana will begin an indefinite strike from Monday. Members of the Telangana Junior Doctors Association (T-JUDA) met the Director of Medical Education (DME) on June 18 and submitted an official strike notice. “All junior doctors across the state will participate in the strike, which will lead to a boycott of outpatient (OP) services, elective surgeries and ward services,” T-JUDA said in a statement on Sunday.

The decision comes in response to unresolved issues affecting the doctors, including setting up a green channel for timely disbursement of stipends, fees for highly specialised senior doctors, deployment of police force to prevent violence against doctors in hospitals, construction of new hostels, adequate teaching staff in medical colleges and a new building for the Osmania General Hospital (OGH). “Despite numerous discussions with the concerned authorities, there is no satisfactory solution to our demands,” they said.

In the run-up to the strike, the junior doctors held several protests: a black badge protest on June 20, a black dress protest on June 21 and a blindfold protest on June 22. “These protests show the government’s disregard for improving health infrastructure,” said Dr G Sai Harsha, president of T-JUDA.

“The strike will continue until our problems are fully resolved. We regret the inconvenience caused to patients and the public. Emergency services will continue to operate as usual,” the doctors said.
