Final at the Queen’s Club: Tommy Paul beats Lorenzo Musetti and follows in the footsteps of Americans John McEnroe, Jimmy Connors and Pete Sampras | Tennis News

Tommy Paul defeated Lorenzo Musetti at the Queen’s Club Championships, won the biggest title of his career and became a member of a renowned American club.

The 27-year-old, seeded fifth, was crowned the new King of Queen’s with a 6-1, 7-6 win in one hour and 28 minutes.

Paul became the first American to win the prestigious pre-Wimbledon tournament since Sam Querrey in 2010, joining a glittering group of former champions from across the pond including John McEnroe, Jimmy Connors and Pete Sampras.

Paul, who knocked out Briton Jack Draper in the quarter-finals, said: “This means everything.

“When you walk down the aisles here in the locker room and see the names on the wall, it’s incredible. It was always my goal to put my name next to them.”

The world number 13 will also overtake her compatriot Taylor Fritz and become the new American number 1.

Paul seemed to be winning the match after serving at 5-4 in the second set, but the Italian Musetti found resistance late and was able to hit back.

In the tiebreak, Musetti fended off two match points with his own serve, but Paul converted the third to secure the win.

Musetti said: “This was definitely one of the best weeks of my career so far.

“Congratulations to Tommy, he deserved the win. I struggled to reach his level.”

“With the break I saved a little bit of face at the end. I fought really hard to get into the third set.”

Musetti, who became a father to his first child in March, added: “I want to dedicate this week to my little boy Ludovico. I just want to go back and hug him.”
