French acting icon Anouk Aimée was celebrated as a “timeless” and “beautiful person” after her death at the age of 92.
The screen goddess became known as the epitome of the doomed love story in the 1960s after appearing in the Oscar-winning film “A Man and a Woman”. It has now been announced that she died on Tuesday (18.06.24) in her home in Paris.
Her agent announced her death, sparking a wave of tributes from celebrities and fans for the actress.
One of the most moving tributes came from Claude Lelouch, the 86-year-old director of A Man and a Woman, who said on X: “Anouk, my nanny, left us this morning. She went to join Jean-Louis, Pierre, Francis and others.”
“She was my companion, my friend forever. She gave me every chance and said yes when other, young filmmakers said no.
“It was because of her and her alone that I guarded the light. Her silhouette and grace will forever be engraved on a Normandy beach.
“Having made the whole earth dream, she will now make the angels dream.”
Claude’s tribute was posted on X as a typed letter with his signature at the bottom.
The cause of Anouk’s death has not yet been determined.
She also appeared in screen masterpieces including “La Dolce Vita” and “8 1/2” by Federico Fellini.
During her career from 1947 until her retirement in 2019, she appeared in 70 films.
Born Nicole Françoise Florence Dreyfus in Paris, she began her film career at the age of 14 after studying acting and dance.
In addition to appearing in a number of French classics, she has also made films in Spain, Italy, Germany, the USA and Great Britain.
Known for her haunting beauty, she was voted one of the sexiest actresses in history. Her accolades included the Best Actress award at the Cannes Film Festival for her work in Marco Bellocchio’s 1980 film Leap in the Dark, and she received an honorary César Award in 2002.
