Reuters: More than 1,000 dead during Hajj in scorching temperatures – mostly Egyptians

More than 1,000 people died during the Hajj this year, according to a Reuters In total, almost two million people took part in the annual Muslim pilgrimage to Mecca, in extreme heat.

Most of the dead were Egyptians. Security and medical sources reported Reuters on June 23 that the Egyptian death toll had risen to 672 and another 25 were missing.

According to the Indonesian government, a total of 236 Indonesians died, while the Foreign Ministry said 98 Indian citizens died during the Hajj.

Additional deaths were reported in Tunisia, Jordan, Iran and Senegal, bringing the total death toll this year to at least 1,114. Reuters to match.

An Egyptian crisis team tasked with investigating the situation said on Saturday that it had revoked the licenses of 16 tourism companies and referred them to the public prosecutor’s office, accusing them of being responsible for deaths that it said were mainly among pilgrims who were not registered in the official system.

The unit said 31 deaths due to chronic diseases were confirmed among officially registered pilgrims.)
