Paul Stanley of Kiss names the greatest singer of all time

Choosing the best singer of all time is difficult, especially when you have so many options. For many, Freddie Mercury is the first to spring to mind, but what about all the other singers who managed to embody the good and the bad of an entire generation? What about Nina Simone, Dolores O’Riordan, Tracy Chapman? The list is endless, but thankfully Paul Stanley of Kiss seems to be the answer.

When studying vocal virtuosos, it’s important to consider what exactly makes a great singer. Is it the ability to fill an entire stadium with a strong and distinctive tone? Or is it about bringing emotional rawness and authenticity to a voice? What about range? Should a great singer be able to switch between notes effortlessly? Usually, the answer to all of these questions depends on the genre.

Outside of pop, for example, most of the singers are perfectly suited to their respective fields, such as Debbie Harry and Chrissie Hynde, whose singing talent is undeniable but perfectly suited the rock feel they exuded. O’Riordan too had a hauntingly beautiful voice, one that included vocal inflections that not only perfectly matched her Irish heritage but also had a pained edge that made her melodies even more chilling.

As for more traditional rock voices, many musicians who were successful in the late 1960s and 1970s were particularly attracted to the way many male rock singers combined emotional aggressiveness with real vocal range, just as Robert Plant gave Led Zeppelin its signature stadium rock sound, the sound that reached the farthest corners of the biggest venues.

In fact, for Paul Stanley, Plant is the greatest singer of all time, whom many have tried in vain to imitate. Stanley saw Led Zeppelin live for the first time in 1969 and found the whole event “transformative”. He remembers the concert during a Forbes In a 2020 interview, he said: “I saw Zeppelin in 1969 and it was transformative. I would say that was God’s work.”

He added: “When you see a band that is so close together, and the synergy within the band, and not just the music but the sexuality of the band. Everything was so powerful and so perfect, that was a transformative moment for me.” In a post on social media, he wished Plant a happy birthday and also remembered the concert as “mind-blowing.”

In another social media post, the musician listed those he considers to be the best singers of all time. After Plant’s coveted spot at the top, he also listed Steve Marriott, Janis Joplin, Ann Wilson, Rod Stewart, and of course, Freddie Mercury. In his eyes, however, Plant will forever remain at the top, not only for his vocal abilities, but also for everything that Led Zeppelin represented as one of the greatest rock bands of all time.
