Packers still thinking about their ex with Jordan Love’s contract timeline

After the Jacksonville Jaguars extended quarterback Trevor Lawrence’s contract, giving him annual revenue of over $55 million, the question became who would be next. While Dak Prescott and the Dallas Cowboys will likely end up agreeing to a deal in the $60 million range – which would make him the highest-paid quarterback in the NFL – the answer isn’t so simple when it comes to Jordan Love and the Green Bay Packers.

The Packers obviously want to keep Love. He’s an incredible talent for a franchise that seems to have luck when it comes to selecting quarterbacks. But as Green Bay fans would argue, if you find three Pro Bowl talents in a row, is that really luck?

Love gave it his all in the second half of last season, leading the Packers to the playoffs and an upset Wild Card round victory over Prescott and the Cowboys. It’s only fair that Love, like Dak, gets the money he deserves. Unlike Dak, however, Love has far less experience and playing time under his belt. Much of that is the Packers’ fault, as they sat him behind Aaron Rodgers early in his career, but the point is the same – is Love a finished product and can he be as productive as he looked in the second half of the 2024 season?

That’s what the Packers are banking on, as ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reported that the Green Bay Packers hope to sign a new contract with their quarterback before training camp.

“The difficult thing is that I’ve talked to a lot of scouts and executives who believe he’s now in the top 10 passers in the entire NFL,” Fowler said. “Just a small sample size and that, as we know, costs a lot of money.”

Most importantly for the Packers, they don’t want to repeat past mistakes. Towards the end of his career, Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers front office had some tough arguments. Rodgers threatened to retire, and the Packers eventually gave in. Eventually, the front office had enough and traded him to the Jets to begin the Love era.

“So they’re going to try to get something cleared up. The Packers would like to get a long-term deal with Love before training camp. That’s their goal. A little bit of pressure on the Packers after all the years of problems and fiascos with Aaron Rodgers. They’d like to have a clean process here just to get this done with Jordan Love,” Fowler continued.

Green Bay would rather avoid another situation like Rodgers’, and with every game Love plays well at quarterback, his price will go up. Their best bet is to sign Love now and hope his camp is open to an offer below what Lawrence eventually accepted. Either way, they would be taking a huge risk.
