As the X-Men As they approach a new era, they must prepare for a new villain and even a new tone for their stories. In addition to two other new series, The Uncanny X-Men by Gail Simone and David Marquez will mark a new chapter for the mutant superteam as they attempt to rise from the ashes of Krakoa’s demise.

In an interview with Den of Geek, Uncanny X-Men Author Gail Simone hints that her new villain for the reboot will be an all-time great psychological horror villain. She also specifically points out that it will be a sexy villain, providing the heroes with an antagonist who could prove equally challenging on an intellectual and possibly also a seductive level.

Just as interesting as Simone’s words about a “Southern Gothic“-tone that will surely symbolize a new era of the X-Men.

The new X-Men era is facing a sexy villain

Mutants, including Gambit, Colossus, Psylocke, Cyclops and Jean Grey, spring into action.

In the interview, Gail Simone reveals that much of the new book will focus on Gambit returning to New Orleans to join forces with the rest of the Uncanny X-Men, namely Wolverine, Jubilee, Nightcrawler, and Rogue. Speaking of which, Rogue will be looking for some peace of mind after everything she went through in the “Fall of X” arc, where she was supposed to avenge Krakoa. This retreat for Rogue is interrupted by a group of young mutants in need of help, as well as a terrifying new villain. Simone added:

Aside from the Southern Gothic vibe, Uncanny X-Men is probably the scariest X-book… I’d put the new villain in there up against any horror movie, any psychological villain out there… and the sexiest.”

The word “sexy” goes hand in hand with the X-Men franchise, mostly. After all, this is a franchise that’s home to the sexiest threesome in Marvel history, as well as a fanbase that’s been accused of being the horniest. There’s even a canon reason why the X-Men are so hot. Having said that, “sexy” And “terrible” are not played together that often in the franchise, so this could present a unique challenge for the X-team. It is especially promising to know that such a villain can be compared to a villain from horror movies.

Particularly promising is the prospect of the X-Men taking on a more gothic tone, most likely due to an eerie New Orleans setting. This seems to suggest that the X-Men will be put in a horror mood rather than anything else. Horror is not a new idea being introduced into the world of the X-Men, as the franchise has been scary before, but Introducing a horror element into the main book of the franchise is surprising. The impact of such a drastically different tone is as clear a sign as any that this is truly a new, fresh era for the X-Men.

The Uncanny X-Men
