Rabha was a resident of Panditpara village under Rangjuli police station.

According to locals, Rabha was out for a walk around 2 am when suddenly a wild elephant attacked him. The elephant dragged him to a nearby village and trampled him to death,” locals said.

Locals informed the police and forest authorities about the incident, and a team of forest guards arrived at the spot in the early hours of Sunday morning and recovered Rabha’s body.

Locals also accused the forest department of ignoring the human-elephant conflict in the area. “We are looking for a permanent solution to prevent further tragedies. We live in fear but we have no one to offer a solution,” said a local resident.

In the last two years, several wild elephants have died due to electrocution in Assam. According to the forest authorities, most of the cases occurred because local residents used live wires near their houses to prevent elephants from moving.

The carcass of an adult elephant was found in the Pengaree area of Tinsukia district on Friday, but the cause of death is unknown.
