Jeep, Dodge, Ram and Chrysler are planning the “death of chrome” because it is toxic

  • Stellantis, parent company of Jeep, Dodge, Ram and Chrysler, is finished with chrome
  • According to design chief Ralph Gilles, the decision to forego chrome is a health-related one
  • VW is taking a similar step and considering light as the new chrome

Stellantis has declared the “death of chrome” Environmental concerns and there are concerns about the health of the workers who make the metal ornaments, design chief Ralph Gilles said in a recent interview with CNN.

Hexavalent chromium, the form of the element chromium used in chrome plating, is a carcinogen and the “second strongest toxic air pollutant identified by the state”, the California Air Resources Board (CARB)the agency responsible for California’s emissions regulations, told CNN that chrome-plated parts are not inherently dangerous, but the plating process poses a risk of releasing hexavalent chromium vapor into the atmosphere or exposing workers to the vapor.

There are methods to minimize human exposure to hexavalent chromium. The National Association for Surface Finishing told CNN that the electroplating industry “has achieved an approximately 99.9% reduction in air emissions of hexavalent chromium since 1995.” However, California is now considering banning chrome plating with the material, according to the report.

Stellantis is also examining alternatives. Jeep Wagoneer S electric SUV will not be available with chrome at all, and that will also be the case for other future Stellantis models, Gilles told CNN.

The initial launch edition of the Wagoneer S features dark trim that is a possible alternative to chrome, Gilles said, citing the current popularity of blackout exterior trim packages. The contrast offered by materials with a more matte finish, such as satin steel or another color, could also be attractive, Gilles said, pointing to bronze, silver or graphite-colored trim as additional chrome alternatives.

The Volkswagen Group also plans to limit the use of chrome, the automaker said in a statement to CNN. But it’s not just about other materials. The automaker said it will also use “light as the new chrome.” Current VW models are equipped with luminous badges that literally outshine chrome.

The BMW Group’s Mini brand has also dispensed with chrome in its latest model series, both on the outside and in the interior of the vehicles.
