Jacob Tremblay was thrilled to be able to record the voice of Flounder on the set of The Little Mermaid with his co-stars instead of sitting isolated in a booth.

When the “Room” actor voiced a character in Pixar’s 2021 animated film “Luca,” he recorded it alone in a booth, so he was thrilled to be able to “record it all together” with his co-stars on the set of the live-action adaptation of “The Little Mermaid.”

“It was definitely challenging because we were all there in person, sort of during rehearsals, but it was definitely a good challenge to be together and shoot those scenes with everyone, so every take was different,” he told Cover Media this week at the film’s premiere in London.

He added: “We recorded it on set and they had basically set it up like a stage. It was really cool to record it together because when you can improvise off each other it really helps the performance.”

The 16-year-old explained that director Rob Marshall and his team also recorded his facial expressions and integrated them into the animated fish.

He shared his reaction to the finished flounder, saying, “I like that all the fish kind of look like real fish and it feels so familiar. I think it’s cool how it really comes to life in a lot of the sequences.”

Tremblay lends his voice to Flounder, alongside Daveed Diggs as Sebastian and Awkwafina as Scuttle, while their live-action co-stars include Halle Bailey, Melissa McCarthy and Javier Bardem.

“The Little Mermaid” will be in theaters on May 26th.
