13 road closures you should know about in Michigan this week

Whether you are embarking on a journey or continuing your commute, there will be numerous roadworks this week that may affect traffic flow.

According to the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT), at least 88 new lanes, ramps and road closures will occur between Sunday, June 23 and Saturday, June 29.

Drivers should expect possible traffic delays, especially during rush hour, on highways such as I-94 in Kalamazoo and Van Buren counties, I-96 in Kent and Ionia counties, M-20 in Oceana County, and I-75 in southeast Michigan.

Below is a list of 13 closures to be aware of this week. All projects are weather dependent. State officials remind drivers to slow down and obey signage in work zones.

I-94 in Kalamazoo and Van Buren counties

Nighttime closures are planned on I-94 between Mile Marker 66.8 and 26th Street starting Sunday evening. One lane will be closed from 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. through June 28.

One lane will also be closed on the exit ramps from I-94 to Main Street (Exit 66) from Sunday evening through Monday morning.

I-75 in Genesee County

A one-lane closure is planned on I-75 northbound between Court Street and I-475. Drivers should expect daily closures from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. starting Sunday through July.

US 24 in Oakland County

One lane of the Dixie Highway (US 24) between White Lake Road and Davisburg Road will be closed in each direction in the Springfield area from 7:00 a.m. Monday to 5:00 p.m. Wednesday.

The access ramps to I-75 from US 24 will remain closed until October.

US 12 in Wayne County

Starting Monday morning at approximately 9 a.m., one lane of Michigan Avenue (US 12) between Belleville Road and I-275 will be closed. The closures in both directions are scheduled to last through July 3.

Additionally, a daily one-lane closure is planned on eastbound US 12 between Livernois Avenue and Junction Street through July 12 and between 14th Street and Brooklyn Street through August 16. Both daily closures will be from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

M-89 in Allegan County

Road work is planned beginning Monday on both directions of M-89 between Doster Road and 8th Street, east of Plainwell. The work will require daily closures from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. through July 27.

M-553 in Marquette County

Evening lane closures are scheduled to begin in Marquette this week. Starting Monday, one lane of M-553 between Division Street and US 41 will be open in each direction from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m.

The closures are expected to end Friday, weather permitting. The road work is part of a $1 million project to resurface approximately 2 miles of road.

I-96 in Kent County

Westbound drivers on I-96 may experience lane closures between Fulton Street (M-21) and the E. Beltline on Monday. The right lane will be closed for maintenance from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The I-96 ramp at Fulton Street will also be closed during this time.

I-96 in Ionia County

Starting Monday morning, temporary one-lane closures are planned on I-96 between Bliss Road and Sunfield Highway. Motorists should be aware of closures from 9 a.m. Monday through 9 p.m. Thursday through July 11.

The work is part of a $105 million project to rebuild 8 miles of I-96 between Bliss Road and Sunfield Road, including improvements to the Jordan Lake Road bridge over the freeway. The bridge was closed last week and will remain closed until November.

I-75 in southeast Michigan

The two left lanes of southbound I-75 between Clark Street and Livernois Avenue will be closed overnight starting Monday. In Wayne County, closures are planned from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m. through July 10.

Additionally, two lanes of the Livernois Road freeway will be closed in Oakland County daily from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. through July 14.

M-20 in Oceana County

Daily closures are planned this week for M-20 between US 31 and Oceana Drive north of Rothbury. Tuesday through Friday, one lane in each direction will be closed from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m.

I-96 in Livingston County

Westbound I-96 in Brighton will be closed from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. daily beginning Tuesday and will last approximately one week. The closure is for epoxy coating and will require a detour via the collector/distributor road.

I-75 in Monroe County

One lane in each direction will be closed temporarily between Front Street and Elm Avenue on Tuesday and Wednesday. Lane closures are scheduled from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on both days.

M-78 and M-66 in Barry, Calhoun and Eaton counties

Two months of construction will take place on Battle Creek Highway (M-78) between Capital Avenue and Campbell Lane. Single-lane closures are planned from 7 a.m. Thursday through August 21.

There will also be one-lane closures on Capital Avenue (M-66) between Huff Road and T Drive during this time.
