“My voice is the conductor of my life… It’s not hard to do a show, it’s hard to cancel a show… My music, I miss it a lot… If I can’t run, I walk, if I can’t walk, I crawl. But I’m not going to stop,” says the super icon Celine Dion.
Céline Dion had it all. She was and is one of the greatest performing artists in the world, greater than the Cariahs, Swifts and Bhosles.
Then she withdrew from the Arclight, began canceling her concerts, and made only occasional public appearances, a pale shadow of her crowd-pleasing self. We thought she had the big C. It was worse. In this extraordinary documentary, Ms. Dion now speaks with the truth about her condition.
In Prime Video I am: Celine Dionthe star beyond the heavens, talks about her struggle with a rare neurological disorder known as Stiff Person SyndromeThe symptoms would look horrific in any individual.
In Ms. Dion’s case, it’s devastating. She actually allowed the camera to record her physical convulsions during a stiff-person attack.
It’s not a pretty sight.
I Am: Celine Dion is a landmark in many ways. It shows us that even the most blessed people on this planet are not immune to sudden, life-threatening setbacks. The “message” is never a main character. Celine’s struggle to regain control of her body and her voice is.
This much can be revealed: Even if you are not a Céline Dion fan (the existence of such a community on this planet is hard to imagine), this outstanding documentary will make you a lifelong fan of the singing diva.
What comes across in strong bursts of glorious courage is Ms. Dion’s determination to overcome her adversity. One of my favorite sections in this Kiss Don’t Yell survival story is the recording session before the end, in which Ms. Dion tries to get her voice back as she sings Love againthe theme song to Priyanka Chopra’s awful romantic comedy in which Ms. Dion made a cameo appearance (a terrible error in judgment that we’ll let slide).
She starts to sing Love again, she stops, she starts again… I have never seen a more determined and courageous person. You may not be a diehard fan of Celine Dion’s music. But I bet you won’t be a lifelong fan of this beautiful woman after seeing her in this immortal document of human resilience.
Director Irene Taylor skilfully mixes and combines previously unreleased footage of the young Céline on stage – her vivacity and quest for immortality are evident from an early stage – with her current struggle against exhaustion and denial of personality.
She’s still so beautiful, still such a peerless diva, and still… even when she’s driven to rest, her voice will continue to ring out. I watched Celine’s uplifting story once for her ravishingly vivacious stage performances, and then again to see how she fought to get there again.
The world remains a stage for the breathtaking Céline Dion. Please help her. But only in a figurative sense. She only seeks real support from herself.
