On Saturday evening, Defense Minister Yoav Gallant traveled to Washington DC for an official visit at the invitation of US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin

During a visit that was overshadowed by the recent disagreement above accusations Following US Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s announcement that the US would halt arms deliveries to Israel, Gallant is scheduled to meet with his counterpart Secretary Austin, Secretary of State Antony Blinken and other senior US officials.

The government of US President Joe Biden has disputed Withholding or delaying arms deliveries to Israel.

Gallant is expected to discuss operations to achieve Israel’s war aims against Hamas, efforts to release hostages held by Hamas, and efforts to achieve regional stability.

The defense secretary is also expected to discuss cooperation between the U.S. and Israeli defense establishments, including arms supplies, as Israel prepares for an intensified conflict with Hezbollah.

Gallant is accompanied by Defense Ministry Director General Major General (Res.) Eyal Zamir, Chief of Staff Shachar Katz, Military Secretary Brigadier General Guy Markizano, and Director of the Political and POL-MIL Office Dror Shalom.

Before his departure, Gallant said: “This evening I will be departing for the United States at the invitation of US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin. The United States is our most important and central ally. Our ties are critical and perhaps more important now than ever.”

“At these meetings, I will discuss developments (on the southern and northern fronts), in Gaza and Lebanon,” Gallant said. “These (discussions) are particularly important and impactful at this time. We are prepared for any action that may be required in Gaza, Lebanon and other areas.”

Gallant said Israel was focused on ending the war effort in Gaza.

“The transition to ‘Phase C’ in Gaza is of great importance. I will discuss this transition with US officials and how it can enable other things, and I know that we will achieve close cooperation with the US on this issue as well.”

The trip to Washington is Gallant’s second visit to the United States since the start of the Gaza war.

While in Washington, the senior Israeli defense officials are expected to meet with their U.S. counterparts to discuss Israel’s preparations for a possible major offensive against Hezbollah in southern Lebanon.

The US is trying to dissuade Israel from invading. However, Israel itself has evacuated tens of thousands of civilians from Israel’s northern communities because of Hezbollah’s constant attacks. The country is now trying to restore calm so that civilians can return home.
