Safari goes wrong: Elephant pulls woman out of vehicle and tramples her to death in Zambia

A 64-year-old tourist from New Mexico, Juliana Gle Tourneau, lost her life in Zambia after a elephant attacked her tour group’s vehicle, dragged her out of the car and trampled her to death. The incident occurred near the Maramba Cultural Bridge in Livingstone, where the group had stopped because of traffic caused by a herd of elephants.
Southern Province Police Commissioner Auxensio Daka reported that one of the elephants pulled Tourneau out of the vehicle and trampled her.“Juliana Gle Tourneau, 64, of New Mexico, United States of America, died at around 5:50 p.m. on Wednesday after she was pushed out of a parked vehicle that had come to a stop due to traffic caused by elephants around the Maramba Cultural Bridge,” Daka told national broadcaster ZNBC.
A similar incident occurred in Kafue National Park in early March, when a bull elephant attacked and overturned a safari truck carrying tourists. The attack resulted in the death of 79-year-old Gail Mattson of Minnesota, while another guest suffered serious injuries and four others suffered minor injuries.
In light of this incident, Zambian authorities have urged tourists to exercise extreme caution when viewing wildlife. This is the second death of a tourist in Zambia this year in connection with an encounter with elephants.
