Who will participate in the College World Series? Teams, odds, standings for the 2024 NCAA baseball tournament

If you like the SEC or the ACC, this College World Series is for you.

No other conference will be represented in Omaha. That reality was evident Sunday night when Oregon and Oregon State both fell to competition from the SEC.

The tournament’s top four seeds all traveled to Omaha, including a College World Series freshman and some of the best offensive players in the country. Also heading to Omaha is one of college baseball’s most exciting players, Jac Caglianone, who brings his two-way game skills back to the sport’s biggest stage.

Here’s a comprehensive look at the 2024 College World Series teams and updated odds for the national championship.

Who will participate in the College World Series in 2024?

No. 1 Tennessee

Tennessee got a bit of a scare when Evansville, the tournament’s Cinderella team, won Game 2 of the Super Regionals, putting the Volunteers in an elimination position. But that stress didn’t last long. Tennessee built a 12-1 lead into the fifth inning of the decisive Game 3 to secure its second consecutive College World Series.

The Volunteers have one of the best offenses in college baseball, lead all power conference teams in the number of home runs per game, and have two dangerous hitters in infielders Christian Moore and Blake Burke.

No. 2 Kentucky

Kentucky has never been to the College World Series – until now. The Wildcats won a close second game against Oregon State in the Super Regionals and traveled to Omaha for the first time.

The Wildcats don’t have nearly the firepower of some SEC rivals, but they do have a promising first-round MLB Draft prospect in outfielder Ryan Waldschmidt and five starters with a batting average of .298 or higher. The biggest question is whether Kentucky’s pitching can compete with some of the best lineups in the country.

No. 3 Texas A&M

The Aggies are back in the College World Series for the second time in the last three years and return as one of the most balanced teams in the nation. Texas A&M ranks seventh in runs scored and sixth in ERA, but it was the hitters who impressed in the Super Regionals, totaling 25 runs in two games against Oregon.

Texas A&M has had three very strong hitters this season, but the player MLB fans should be keeping an eye on is now out of the tournament altogether. Shortstop Braden Montgomery suffered a serious ankle injury in the Super Regionals and was ruled out for the College World Series, dealing a major blow to the Aggies’ offense.

Montgomery, who could be a top-10 pick in July’s draft, hit .322 this season with 27 home runs and an OPS of 1.187.

No. 4 North Carolina

The Tar Heels won two close games against West Virginia in the Super Regionals to secure their first College World Series appearance since 2018. Like Texas A&M, they are evenly matched.

North Carolina ranks in the top 15 in the nation in both runs and ERA, and its offense is led by the powerful trio of Vance Honeycutt, Parks Harber and Casey Cook, with Honeycutt bringing 26 home runs and an OPS of 1.112 to Omaha.

Starting pitcher Jason DeCaro, who has a 3.89 ERA in 17 starts but has struggled with control issues, improved tremendously against West Virginia and will be crucial to the Tar Heels’ success on the biggest stage.

No. 8 Florida State

Florida State can score runs, and that’s exactly what the Seminoles did in their Super Regionals series against UConn. FSU scored 34 runs, including 24 in Game 1, and made short work of the Huskies. Time will tell if that performance can hold up against the best of the best.

The Seminoles have two real first-round prospects in this year’s MLB Draft in 3B Cam Smith and OF James Tibbs. Tibbs has 28 home runs and an excellent OPS of 1.309, while Smith has a .402 batting average with 16 home runs. Florida State’s pitching staff will have to rely heavily on ace Jamie Arnold, but the offense could make his task easier when he’s on the mound.

No. 10 NC State

NC State was the final team to secure its spot in the College World Series by defeating Charlie Condon and Georgia in the Super Regionals in a decisive third game. The Wolfpack’s offense exploded, scoring a total of 26 runs in their two victories over the Bulldogs, including 18 in Game 1.

Leading the way for NC State’s offense is 3B Alec Makarewicz. The infielder has 21 home runs and 77 RBIs so far this year and has a .380 batting average. Behind him is 1B Garrett Pennington, who has a .347 batting average with 17 home runs and 63 RBIs.

No. 12 Virginia

Virginia enters the College World Series ranked fourth in the nation in runs scored, and that’s the result you get when more than half the lineup has an OPS over 1.000. While the Cavaliers aren’t all that strong, their .336 is the best of any power conference team. Everyone who went to bat for Virginia in Game 2 against Kansas State recorded a hit, and that sums up the kind of tightrope the pitchers will have to walk against this Cavaliers lineup.

Florida

Florida is the only unseeded team in the College World Series, winning a thrilling battle against Clemson in the Super Regionals that also featured some controversial decisions. Fans of all levels will be excited to see highly touted MLB draft prospect Jac Caglianone back in Omaha.

Caglianone put up otherworldly numbers in 2024, hitting .411 with 33 home runs and an OPS of 1.392 while starting 15 games for the Gators and striking out 82 batters on the mound.

Aside from Caglianone, there are doubts about Florida’s offense, particularly the team’s ability to make contact. That’s one of the reasons Florida was an underdog in the first place, despite Caglianone’s performance. However, the Gators are certainly no newcomers to Omaha and will hope to keep their magic alive in the title race.
