Michigan police say woman lived on roof of grocery store sign for nearly a year

A 34-year-old woman has been living in the roof sign of a grocery store for nearly a year, Michigan State Police said.

She had given the Family Fare Market sign a home last year and added flooring, a computer, a printer and a coffee maker to the enclosed sign, Midland police told MLive.

She was discovered in April by construction workers who needed a ladder to get to the site and was later asked by police to find a new place to live, the Detroit Free Press reported. Police said there was no access door to the roof, WILX reported.

“They knocked on the door and she opened the door and they essentially told her, ‘Hey, you can’t be here,’ and the conversation was pretty brief. She understood completely,” Brennon Warren, a spokeswoman for the Midland Police Department, told the Detroit Free Press.

Police told WEYI that the woman had been offered accommodation but had declined.

The store has not filed criminal charges against the woman and wants to work with the woman to return her belongings, police told WEYI.

Family Fare’s parent company, SpartanNash, said in a statement: “We are proud of our employees who responded to this situation with the utmost compassion and professionalism. Ensuring adequate safe and affordable housing continues to be a national issue that our community must work together to solve. Out of respect for the privacy of the individuals affected, we will not be making any further comment,” the Midland Daily News said.

Midland is located about 210 kilometers northwest of Detroit.
