Senator Preston launches summer book club to encourage children to read (Chicago, IL) – To encourage summer reading, State Senator Willie Preston is creating a summer book club for children and teens living in the state’s 16th Senate District.

“Youth activities have always been one of my top priorities,” said Preston (D-Chicago). “To positively engage young people in the district, I have provided funding for afterschool and summer programs and am excited to host this book club to build on that momentum.”

ok, write the names of the books on a form and return the form to Preston’s office by Friday, August 16. Everyone who participates in the Summer Book Club will receive a gift card and certificate from Preston.

Preston hopes his book club will help counteract the “summer slump” – the loss of academic skills that occurs during the school year – and raise awareness of the problem, which is largely due to a lack of reading.

“It’s important that children become good readers so they can be successful in school and in life,” Preston said. “By setting aside just 10 to 15 minutes of reading each day, we can encourage lifelong learning and help keep our students’ minds sharp and ready for school in the fall.”

To obtain a book club form, visit SenatorPreston.com/SBC to download and print the form.

Preston encourages interested residents to call his office at 773-782-1607 with further questions.
