The Weeknd says his voice is on the mend, a new date for the LA concert will be “scheduled soon”

The Weeknd says his voice is on the mend, a new date for the LA concert will be “scheduled soon”

Three days after having to cancel his second concert at Sofi Stadium in Los Angeles after just 15 minutes, The Weeknd announced that his voice has recovered, his two Toronto performances later this month are on schedule and he is trying to make up for Saturday night’s postponed show. Further details were not immediately available.

“The doctor says my voice is fine and with some rest I will be back in shape and able to deliver the show my fans are waiting for in Toronto,” he posted Tuesday afternoon. “The LA date will be set soon. Thank you for all the love and understanding that has been shown to me. I love you all so much… XO”

About 15 minutes into Saturday’s show, The Weeknd’s voice audibly failed as he shouted “What’s up, LA?”, and after four songs, he decided he couldn’t continue.

“I don’t know what just happened… but I just lost my voice,” he told the crowd from the stage. “This is killing me, I don’t want to stop the show, but I can’t give you the concert I want to give you right now. I’m going to make sure everyone’s OK – you’re getting your money back – I’m going to do a show for you soon. But I wanted to come out and apologize in person.”

“You know how much this kills me. I’m sorry. I love you, thank you so much,” he said before leaving the stage.

Saturday’s aborted show was filmed for the upcoming HBO Max show “The Idol,” in which The Weeknd stars alongside Lily-Rose Depp. Wearing a white evening gown and her hair up, she took the stage to deliver key lines from one of the show’s penultimate moments. “I’ve had a rough year,” she says in character. “This world can be a cruel and unforgiving place and there were moments when I didn’t know if I was going to make it.”

While most of the shows on the After Hours Til Dawn tour – the Weeknd’s first stadium tour – went off without a hitch, the first and (originally planned) final date encountered significant problems. The planned opening show in The Weeknd’s hometown of Toronto had to be postponed minutes before doors opened due to a nationwide Rogers cell phone outage – roughly equivalent to T-Mobile or Verizon outages in the US. Like many businesses across Canada, the venue (ironically, Rogers Stadium) was unable to sell tickets, food and beverages, and process other transactions.

The Toronto date was rescheduled for September 22 (a second date was added for the 23rd) – after the North American leg of the tour was originally scheduled to end with the LA date on Saturday night when his voice failed.

Now it seems that after the two dates in Toronto – and another trip across the continent – the actual finale of the North American leg will take place in Los Angeles after all.
