Petco Love celebrates Pet Care Month and reminds pet lovers that they can save a life

MORRIS COUNTY – National nonprofit Petco Love is celebrating June as National Foster a Pet Month to inspire communities to get involved and support their local animal shelters through the temporary adoption of pets. Launched by the organization in 2019, June is National Foster a Pet Month and encourages people to foster a pet before the most difficult summer months when shelters become overcrowded.

“Animal shelters across the country are in crisis. And loving, happy, healthy pets are at risk of being euthanized simply because of lack of space. Pet care is the answer to prevent unnecessary euthanasia of shelter animals. If just 2% more of the 87 million households with pets fostered just one pet per year, we could end euthanasia in America’s shelters tomorrow,” said Susanne Kogut, President of Petco Love.

Kogut attributes the life-saving success of a mid-sized shelter she managed nearly 20 years ago to its extensive foster program, which increased the number of animals in foster homes by over 600%. She is also a dedicated animal caregiver and has cared for over 500 animals. “Fostering is easier than people think,” Kogut says. “I encourage more people to give it a try. Whether you’re fostering an animal for a short time or until adoption, you’re giving the kitten, cat, puppy, adult dog or senior animal a break from the shelter. Showing them your love and home makes a huge difference, especially if the animal needs to be euthanized. Fostering saves lives.”

Young animal lover Sophia Gillen, 16, of Mountain Lake has heard the message about pet care loud and clear. Inspired by Petco Love’s “Grooming Month,” Sophia started a petition asking New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy to make pet care a priority. Sophia’s advocacy led Governor Murphy to declare June “Grooming Month” in the state, marking a significant step in the nationwide effort to prioritize pet care.

Sophia’s journey began as part of her Girl Scout Gold Award project, aptly named “Phenomenal Foster Pets.” After eight months of dedicated communication with the Governor’s office, her passion and perseverance led to this important recognition. She also developed a fun lesson to teach Girl Scouts of all ages the importance of fostering, how to advocate for shelter dogs and cats, and how to earn a unique pet foster badge.

“I want to inspire other Girl Scouts and young activists to take similar action in their states,” said Sophia Gillen. “Many animals can be saved if state leaders stand up for animal welfare. I hope Foster a Pet Month will be recognized in all 50 states.”

“Sophia is an impressive young woman,” said Kogut. “Her drive and commitment to animal welfare at such a young age is truly inspiring. We are excited to highlight her achievements and support her goal of expanding this initiative nationwide.”
