Summary

  • Dexter’s love for Hannah led to sloppy mistakes and put his family and his newfound life in danger.
  • Dexter’s refusal to follow his code and kill Saxon had tragic consequences and Debra’s death.
  • Dexter’s final killing of Debra and his decision to drive into a storm symbolize his realization that he has nothing left.

There was great controversy and even outrage over the series finale of Dexterwhich aired in 2013. The acclaimed series is widely regarded as one of the best thriller series of all time and is considered by some to be one of the best shows of all time. In “Dexter,” Michael C. Hall plays the eponymous protagonist, who also appears as a forensic scientist and blood spatter analyst for the Miami Metro Police Department, as well as a methodical, self-proclaimed serial killer, in eight seasons and 96 episodes. Dexter breaks with the convention of traditional serial killers by adhering to a strict code and mostly refuses to kill innocent people.

The series finale of Dexter finds the charismatic protagonist completely isolated after he has completely given up his life in Miami following the tragic death of his sister Debra. It is certainly questionable whether Dexter will take Debra off life support in her final moments. Dexter Season 8 was more an act of mercy than violence, but ultimately his actions, or more precisely, his inaction to kill Oliver Saxon, the heartless murderer who shot Debra after Dexter uncharacteristically spared him, ultimately cost Debra her life. Remarkably, Dexter got away with dozens of murders over the course of the series, but life eventually caught up with him.

Why Saxon killed his own mother Dr. Vogel in “Dexter,” Season 8, Episode 10

Saxon is as cold-blooded and psychopathic as one can be

Oliver Saxon is one of the most evil villains in the Dexter series who shockingly killed his own mother in front of Dexter shortly after being reunited with her. Saxon, whose real name is Daniel Vogel, is the second son of Dr. Elvelyn Vogel, who was a confidante of Dexter’s throughout Season 8 after she revealed to him that his father, Harry Morgan, had asked her for help. Dr. Vogel was the person who actually developed Harry’s Code, which defined Dexter’s entire methodology and morality of killing. Unlike Dexter, Saxon was a true psychopath who was incapable of feeling love for another human being.. For this reason, just before he plans to murder him, Dexter tells him that he and Saxon are actually not alike at all, since Dexter loves Hannah, Harrison and Debra.

In the penultimate episode of DexterSeason 8, Episode 11, Saxon shows up at Dexter’s apartment and gives him a choice: either avoid Saxon or face the consequences. Dexter lies to Saxon and agrees to leave him alone, but because of Harry’s code, he can’t rest until he knows Saxon is dead, especially after seeing what he could do to his own mother. Dexter couldn’t leave Saxon for two main reasonsFirst, Harry’s code essentially prevented him from turning the other cheek and forgetting what Saxon had done to Dr. Vogel, as well as Cassie and Dexter’s potential protégé, Zach Hamilton. Second, Dexter didn’t have the self-control not to kill Saxon, even though he knew he very well could have, and ultimately should have.

Unfortunately for Debra, her love and trust in Dexter ended up backfiring on her. Even after everything they’d been through, especially in the last three seasons where Debra finds out Dexter is a serial killer and Debra shoots LaGuerta instead of her brother, Dexter can’t find a surefire way to protect Debra from Saxon. Dexter wanted to do Debra a favor since she had just returned to the Miami Metro Police Department by leaving Saxon for her to take care of so she would be professionally rewarded. Dexter’s plan backfires horribly when a deputy marshal gets involved, freeing Saxon and giving him the opportunity to shoot Debra, resulting in her death. No matter how you look at it, Debra’s blood is undoubtedly on Dexter’s hands.

Dexter meets a teary-eyed Joey Quinn in the intensive care unit, who explains that there were complications with Debra’s operation. A doctor confirms that Debra will be in a coma for life.

Debra poetically becomes Dexter’s final victim in the series when Dexter removes her from her incubator and turns off her life support. He then takes her on his infamous Slice of Life motorboat and does to Debra what he did to dozens of his victims as the Bay Harbor Butcher: He rolls her body into the open sea. At that moment Dexter realizes that there is really nothing left for him to live foralthough his young son Harrison and the love of his life Hannah are waiting for him and counting on him. Dexter steers his boat into a hurricane with the intention of dying so that the people he loves, like Debra and Rita among others, do not die because of him.
