Non-profit organization Love Washtenaw launches “40-day” campaign to combat crime

News from the community
This Saturday, June 22nd, marks the official countywide launch of a new organization dedicated to improving the quality of life in Washtenaw County. From June 22nd through July 31st, Love Washtenaw, a faith-based coalition, is committed to improving the lives of others by engaging the general public through social events with the goal of making a positive impact on reducing crime during the summer.

“To break the cycle of crime, young people need to have a healthy relationship with a healthy adult, develop positive self-esteem, and feel like they are part of something bigger than themselves,” says Reverend Daniel Jackson, executive director of Love Washtenaw. That is why we come together with love, compassion and official act for 40 days with at least 40 mobilization events and the goal of doing more. The June 22 events are just the beginning and we want volunteers to help us keep the excitement and the action going.” The organization also needs more Washtenaw businesses to sponsor programs in the same neighborhoods they work in.

BACKGROUND: This initiative is supported by the Washtenaw County Sheriff and the City of Ypsilanti after a study showed that crime rates in Washtenaw County increased in July in certain “hot spots” and that the crime was retaliatory and often occurred at funerals. Although churches have played a role in the end of life process, they have now formed this coalition to break the cycle of crime associated with it.
