In the Michigan primary elections on August 6, voters must decide which candidate they will vote for. However, they cannot reverse their choice of president.

The presidential primaries took place in February. President Joe Biden won the Democratic primary and former President Donald Trump won the Republican primary.

Following Biden’s decision to drop out of the race, his successor will be chosen through a different process. Based on the results of the presidential primary, 115 delegates in Michigan were set to support Biden at the Democratic National Convention. Those delegates are now free and will be part of a process that ultimately selects the party’s nominee.

Here are some frequently asked questions about the August election.

Q: Who is on the ballot?

A: Candidates for the U.S. Senate, U.S. House of Representatives, and Michigan House of Representatives. In some places, voters elect county-level officials such as sheriffs, treasurers, and clerks. Some city, village, or township offices may also be on the ballot, as may issues such as bond issuance.

The Free Press offers a voter’s guide to the contested primaries for the U.S. Senate, the U.S. House of Representatives, the state House of Representatives districts in Detroit and some district offices in the Detroit metropolitan area.

Q: Can I split my ticket?

A: No. This is a partisan primary. You must select a party’s ballot and vote for that party’s candidates running against other candidates from the same party.
