The cause of death of Clint Eastwood’s long-time partner Christina Sandera was announced a few days after her death at the age of 61.

The unforgiven The 94-year-old actor had been in a relationship with Sanderas since 2014 and confirmed her death in a statement on Thursday (July 18). The couple reportedly met when she was working as a hostess at the actor’s Mission Ranch Hotel and Restaurant in Carmel-by-the-Sea, California.

A representative of the Monterey County Health Department said Sandera died of a heart attack and confirmed the news to the New York Post.

Sandera’s death certificate listed the cause of death as cardiac arrhythmia, meaning a heartbeat that was too fast, slow or irregular. Atherosclerotic coronary artery disease was also listed as a cause of death.

Atherosclerosis occurs when fatty deposits (called atheromas) build up on the walls of the arteries around the heart and narrow them, restricting blood flow to the heart and subsequently throughout the body.

When atheromas rupture, blood clots can form, further blocking blood flow in the body. Atherosclerosis becomes particularly concerning when it reduces blood supply to the heart or brain, as this can lead to a heart attack or stroke.

Eastwood announced Sandera’s death in a statement The Hollywood Reporterand said: “Christina was a wonderful, caring woman and I will miss her very much.”

Sandera and Eastwood remained quiet about their relationship. However, she attended the Oscars with Eastwood in 2015 when his war film American sniper was in the running for six Oscars, including Best Picture.

She also joined the Gran Torino Actors on several red carpets: Defiling (2016), The mule (2018), The 15:17 to Paris (2018) and Richard Jewell (2019).

Sandera was a long-time resident of Carmel. Eastwood began dating her in 2014 after divorcing his second wife, news anchor Dina Eastwood. He was previously married to model Maggie Johnson from 1953 to 1984.

Eastwood has had other long-term relationships in between. He dated stuntwoman Roxanne Tunis, the late actress Sondra Locke (they were partners for 14 years and starred in four films together), flight attendant Jacelyn Reeves, and actress Frances Fisher (they were together for five years and starred in four films together).
