FX hopes for its first historic win in the “Best Drama Series” category with “Shōgun” – GoldDerby

FX hopes for its first historic win in the “Best Drama Series” category with “Shōgun” – GoldDerby

Some of the most iconic drama series in recent television history have aired on FX: “The Shield,” “Nip/Tuck,” “Rescue Me,” “Damages,” “Sons of Anarchy,” “Justified,” “The Americans,” “Pose,” etc. However, the cable network has never taken home the coveted Emmy Award for Best Drama Series. Until now? According to Gold Derby’s Emmy predictions, “Shōgun” has the best chance of winning the top prize on September 15, having received more nominations (25) than any other show during the 2023-24 eligibility period.

The lavishly produced Japanese historical drama is based on James Clavell1975 novel, which was previously adapted into NBC’s three-time Emmy-winning 1980 miniseries. The five nominated actors for the 2024 FX version are Hiroyuki Sanada as Lord Yoshii Toranaga and Anna-Lena Schröder as Toda Mariko in the leading role, Tadanobu Asano as Kashigi Yabushige and Takehiro Hira as Ishido Kazunari in support and Nestor Carbonell with Vasco Rodrigues as guest.

In addition to series and acting, “Shōgun” received other outstanding Emmy nominations for directing (Frederick EO Toye for “Crimson Sky”) and write x2 (Rachel Kondo and Justin Marks for “Anjin”; Rachel Kondo and Caillin Puente for “Crimson Sky”). Below-the-line services include production design, casting, cinematography x2, costumes, picture editing, hair styling, credits design, non-prosthetic makeup, prosthetic makeup, music composition, credits music, sound editing, sound mixing, visual effects and stunts.

Earlier this year, awards experts assumed that Shogun would compete at the Emmys as a miniseries. In May, however, FX announced that it was “working to renew the critically acclaimed global hit for two additional seasons of drama series.” The network added, “Production timing has not yet been determined, but a writing team is being assembled that will begin in the summer.” This led to the switch from miniseries to drama series, and the series soon became the frontrunner for the Emmys as Best Drama Series.

Here are the eight nominees in this year’s drama race and the number of Emmy nominations each received: “Shōgun” (25), “The Crown” (18), “Mr. and Mrs. Smith” (16), “The Morning Show” (16), “Fallout” (16), “Slow Horses” (9), “The Gilded Age” (6) and “Three Bodies” (6).

To date, FX has only competed for the Best Drama Series award six times. “Damages” lost to “Mad Men” in 2008 and 2009, “The Americans” lost to “Game of Thrones” in 2016 and 2018, and “Pose” lost to “GoT” in 2019 and “The Crown” in 2021. Will “Shōgun” win the award for the seventh time this year? Stay tuned. Note that FX has already won Best Comedy Series once (“The Bear” in 2023) and Best Miniseries three times (“Fargo” in 2014, “The People v. OJ Simpson: American Crime Story” in 2016, and “The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story” in 2018).
