Michigan man who kidnapped store manager and forced him to reveal alarm code for the theft of 123 firearms sentenced to prison

BENTON HARBOR, Mich. (CBS DETROIT) – A Michigan man is sentenced to 15 years in prison for kidnapping the manager of a Dunham’s Sports store and stealing more than 100 guns from the Benton Harbor store.

Dontell Nance, 25, was charged with kidnapping and use of a firearm during and in relation to a crime of violence, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office. Nance pleaded guilty to the charges in April 2024. His brother, Darnell Bishop, pleaded guilty to the same charges earlier this month and is scheduled to be sentenced on October 25.

According to federal prosecutors, Nance and Bishop kidnapped the store manager at gunpoint outside his home on November 16, 2023, and took him into the store, where they forced him to give the store’s alarm code. The men then stole 123 handguns, which they took in two refrigerators.

The pistols have since been confiscated.

“This sentence is the consequence of a wrongdoer who possessed illegal firearms and posed a significant threat to community safety,” said Cheyvoryea Gibson, special agent in charge of the FBI in Michigan, in a statement. “Working with the Benton Harbor Safe Streets Task Force and our other law enforcement partners is an example of the effectiveness of teamwork. I am grateful for the quick action of the men and women of the FBI’s Detroit Field Office, which undoubtedly saved lives.”
