Heat probably caused death at Sunbeam rest area » Holtville Tribune

SEELEY — The body of a man was found next to a tree at the Jaime Obeso Sunbeam rest area on Monday afternoon, July 22, according to the Imperial County Coroner’s Office.

The death is believed to be heat-related and there are no signs of foul play, “but we’ll know more at the autopsy,” said Sheriff Sergeant George Figueroa, deputy coroner.

“A passerby found the deceased unconscious under a tree in the rest area,” the sergeant said, adding that the unidentified man was found on the north side of the rest area in an unspecified area. The passerby reported the discovery at around 3:20 p.m.

Sheriff’s deputies were on the scene along with paramedics who “attempted life-saving measures in the ambulance,” Figueroa said. The man was then pronounced dead at the scene.

Figuera said paramedics told officers on the scene that the man had been camping in the area with his vehicle for several weeks. No further information was available.
