Ex-boyfriend charged with murder of pregnant 16-year-old, Gwinnett County police say

ATLANTA, Georgia (Atlanta News First) – A week after the family of a 16-year-old pregnant woman found her dead on the side of a road in Gwinnett County, the girl’s ex-boyfriend is now facing charges in connection with her death, police say.

Jesus Monroy is charged with first-degree murder, premeditated murder, abortion of fetuses and aggravated assault, the Gwinnett County Police Department said Tuesday. Monroy was arrested two days after Mia Campos’ body was found, although he was only charged with lying to police at the time.

Campos’ family confirmed that Monroy was the father of the unborn child.

At around 1 a.m. on July 15, police were called to the 3600 block of Stephens Road in Loganville, where Campos’ family had found her body in a wooded area near the road using a cellphone tracking app. They told police she had left the house the night before with an unknown person.

Edward Campos, the teenager’s father, said she was less than a mile from home.

“I found my daughter lying face down,” he told Atlanta News First. “It was hard. I knew something was wrong – her lips, her nose bleeding. They murdered my baby.”

The teenager’s family has started an online fundraiser to finance the funeral.
