Update on the death of Ella Adler: No charges filed two months after the killing of a teenager in Florida

More than two months after Florida teenager Ella Adler was fatally struck by a boat while wakeboarding, no charges have been filed.

Adler, a 15-year-old Miami Beach resident, died on May 11 after being struck by a vessel that was leaving the scene of an accident.

The teenager had fallen into the water before the fatal collision. She was on a boat with 13 other people, according to an accident report from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission.

Among the people were eleven teenagers, one 21-year-old and two people in their 30s.

Another passenger on the boat was on a wakesurf board and fell into the water at a different location. She was uninjured in the accident.

In May, the FWC announced Newsweek “Significant progress” is being made in the investigation.

The FWC identified 78-year-old Coral Gables resident Carlos Guillermo Alonso in the accident report as the driver of the boat that struck Adler. He also owns the boat.

Alonso was the only person on board the 42-foot Boston Whaler at the time of the accident.

Alonso’s lawyer Lauren Field Krasnoff previously said Newsweek that Alonso was “devastated”.

“This was an unimaginable tragedy and we are heartbroken for Ella and her family,” Krasnoff said.

She also said he had no previous convictions and was driving at a “reasonable speed”.

“He wasn’t drinking. And he had no idea he might have hit anyone – he parked the boat at his house, he was quiet, he didn’t clean the boat and he wasn’t trying to hide anything,” Krasnoff said.

Krasnoff said Alonso is cooperating with the investigation. Krasnoff said Newsweek On Tuesday there will be “no updates from our side”.

Newsweek He has also contacted the FWC for an update on the investigation.

Adler is the granddaughter of U.S. Ambassador to Belgium Michael M. Adler. First Lady Jill Biden visited the family on May 14 to express her condolences.

Adler was a student at the Ransom Everglades School in Miami. She was involved in the school theater, the dance team and the Jewish Students Association.

She had a passion for ballet and performed in over 100 performances of The Nutcracker with the Miami City Ballet.

“In her 15 years on this earth, she dazzled us with her light,” her obituary said. “She radiated love and joy. She was beautiful. When she walked into a room, everyone was drawn to her. She loved to dance, she loved her friends and most of all, she loved her family.”
