Rod Stewart’s wife Penny Lancaster spoke about the terrible agony she endured before being diagnosed with menopause, even admitting to throwing “plates of food” around the kitchen as a coping strategy.

The deputy was 49 when she began experiencing symptoms of menopause, and it wasn’t long before she, Stewart and their sons Alastair and Aiden moved to Florida.

Lancaster had been advised by her Loose Women friends that it might be a completely natural health battle, but thought she was too young for a diagnosis.

She went to the doctor about her symptoms and was given some antidepressants, but admitted that she quickly felt “numb” afterwards and was unsure if the diagnosis was accurate.

Things escalated one evening when she was cooking dinner for her family and was frustrated because her sons would not come down for dinner despite calling her several times.

“The two boys and Rod. And I took the plates and threw them across the kitchen. It’s an outrageous thought – who the hell would throw dinner like that?

“But the physical act (was hard to stop) … because I couldn’t control it anymore. I didn’t want to hurt anyone. I didn’t want to hurt myself. But I felt like it was getting to that point.

“I hurt myself. I hurt someone. I was throwing those plates of food around the kitchen as hard as I could, trying to make as much noise as possible. As if the noise… as if someone would wake up, someone would notice me, someone would know the answer,” she told the Times.

She revealed that fortunately no one was hurt and that only the kitchen needed to be redecorated a little, adding that she was lying on the floor crying shortly after the incident.

“It was, of course, a complete shock to Rod and the boys. Rod just said, ‘Boys, go into the other room. Leave Mommy here.’ He came over and said, ‘It’s OK, darling. It’s OK, it’s OK.’ I was shaking.

“I can’t do this. What the hell is wrong with me?’ I thought I was going crazy. Rod said, ‘All right, we have to get you to the doctor. You can’t go on like this. There has to be an answer. There has to be something.’

Talking about how she felt while taking antidepressants, she added that despite her attempts, she “couldn’t feel happy” and didn’t care about anything or anyone around her.

“I didn’t care what happened.”

Lancaster’s update comes just days after the couple celebrated their 17th wedding anniversary. Her son Alastair’s girlfriend, Eloise Darlington, posted a now-deleted photo of the couple.
