One of them was lead actor Chris Pine, who played James Kirk in the reboot and got a black eye while filming a scene in the third installment. The actor was allegedly punched by Idris Elba, who mistakenly gave him a black eye. However, that didn’t stop the actor from shrugging it off and finishing the film in true Kirk fashion.

After the reboot by JJ Abrams Star Trek Films with Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto as Captain Kirk and Spock, the filmmaker resigned as director when he received the war of stars sequel trilogy. This led to filmmaker Justin Lin taking over the post of director for the third film Star Trek: Beyond – Journey into the Past.
Although the film received positive reviews and was commercially successful, events behind the scenes were reportedly anything but smooth sailing. Lin was under a tight deadline and had to pull out all the stops to finish the film on time, and he was also hit by an injury on set.
Actor Idris Elba, who played the villain Krall in the film, reportedly hit Chris Pine a little too hard while filming an action scene. Although it wasn’t too bad, the fight scene resulted in Pine getting a noticeable black eye that was worked into the film. Elba told THR:
We were laughing. Chris and I were laughing, and then I gave him a black eye. Well, we were doing a fight scene, and he got a little bit cheeky, and I was like, “Pow!” I didn’t mean to do that, but Chris was pretty proud of it.
The lead actor getting injured on set was no joke, but Pine reportedly shrugged it off and even claimed it was funny (via People).
Justin Lin had to film Star Trek: Beyond – Journey into the Past Fast
While the second film in the reboot series Star Trek Into Darkness was a commercial success, many criticized the lack of mystery surrounding Benedict Cumberbatch’s Khan. In comparison, Star Trek: Beyond – Journey into the Past was often seen as an improvement and was handled well by Justin Lin given the limitations he had. The film even grossed a decent $343 million worldwide against a $185 million budget (via Box Office Mojo).
Lin was reportedly brought into the film after Roberto Orci’s departure. According to Deadline, many other directors were considered, such as Edgar Wright, Rupert Wyatt and Lin, with the latter eventually getting the job after declining to return to the film. Lin told Josh Horowitz that Abrams liked his pitch for the film and told him they needed to start production by June when they met in January. He said:
On Monday, I went and sat down with JJ and told him about the idea for Star Trek Beyond. And he said, “Great!” And it’s the end of January. He said, “Let’s do it, but we have to start production in June.” No script. Nothing. … It was hard. It was the hardest thing I’ve ever had to do.
However, Lin praised his co-writer and actor Simon Pegg for his incredible support, mentioning that they both abandoned the film together several times before it came to fruition.
