Bride’s friend tells her she can’t play a particular song at a Taylor Swift-themed wedding

A bride and her friend got into an argument over the choice of one of their wedding songs.

In a recent Reddit post shared on the True Swifties subreddit, the woman explained that her friend was getting married in a few weeks, with a Taylor Swift theme. However, according to the woman, the two got into a disagreement during the planning stages about the music that should be played.

“During the ceremony she wants to play the song ‘Lover’ which is one of her favorites and I understand that but I try to tell her that it would be insensitive to play ‘Lover’ since Taylor specifically added it to her rejection playlist and it would invalidate it but she keeps saying it’s her wedding and she can play whatever she wants,” the post reads.

The Grammy winner’s playlist about her grief was created with Apple Music in April when her latest album, “The Tortured Poets Department,” was released. At the time, Swift divided all of her songs into the five stages of grief, with each stage represented by a playlist.

The phases are: denial, anger, bargaining, depression and acceptance.

The description of the Denial album explained that Swift’s fans, also called “Swifties,” theorized that The Tortured Poet’s Department would “explore the five stages of heartbreak.”

“And when Swifties agree on a theory, Taylor shows interest – so of course she responds by putting together a series of exclusive playlists, choosing her own songs to fit each phase,” Apple Music’s description reads.

“This is a list of songs about getting so caught up in an idea of something that you barely recognize the warning signs, potentially leading to moments of denial and maybe a little delusional. The results may vary,” Swift told Apple Music about the album, titled “I Love You, It’s Ruining My Life Songs.”

One of the songs on this playlist was “Lover,” the song the bride was considering for her wedding.

The Reddit post detailed that their argument ended in a fight and that the two haven’t spoken since. According to the woman, she’s not sure if missing her friend’s wedding is worth it.

After the post, many people in the comments section explained that this was not the kind of argument that should end a friendship over.

“First of all, it’s your friend’s wedding, not yours, so you can’t tell her what songs to play and what not to play. Secondly, you need to take a deep breath and detach yourself from this weird Taylor parasocial thing you have going on,” one comment began.

“Insensitive? To Taylor Swift? Are you serious? I’m so stunned I can’t believe this is a real post written by a grown adult whose friends are old enough to get married.”

Another Swift fan explained in his comment that just because the singer has a certain opinion about one of her songs, it doesn’t necessarily mean that listeners have to feel the same way.

“Taylor included ‘Lover’ on her denial playlist, but that was her opinion on the song she wrote. She made it very clear that these songs belong to us once they’re released, so her relationship to the song has nothing to do with your boyfriend’s relationship to the song,” they wrote in their comment.

“Girl Taylor would tell you to stop that and let your girlfriend do what she wants with her music. When an artist releases music, it’s ours. We put our own emotions into the song, they mean what we want them to mean. I think you need to rethink your relationship with celebrities.”
