Michigan State Spartans secure commitment from George Mullins

Three-star cornerback George Mullins committed to the Michigan State Spartans on Saturday. Mullins is head coach Jonathan Smith’s 10th 2025 signing and the first cornerback in the class.

The 6-foot-2, 175-pound South Sumter High School junior has an 87 rating on 247Sports and is the 62nd-ranked cornerback in his class and the 79th-ranked player in the state of Florida.

Mullins was one of Many major destinations visit East Lansing on the last official visiting weekend before the summer lull.

Mullins had over 20 offers and only visited one other school – Oregon State. Mullins is a great addition to Smith’s team, namely safety coach Blue Adams and Demetrice Martin. Both have been outstanding this season and have received positive reviews from the recruits I’ve spoken to.

The Spartans’ staff has been looking for their first defensive back for the 2025 class for some time. Three-star cornerback Jayden Shipps from Maryland seemed like a potential target, but he expressed interest in Maryland and NC State and ultimately did not take an official visit to Michigan State.

Three-star athlete Desmond Straughton of Roseville High School had experience as a safety. He is currently on an official visit to Illinois, which has recently been heavily committed to the defensive back. His 247Sports Crystal Ball favors the Illini.

LaRue Zamorano, a three-star cornerback from California, had the Spartans as his favorite team the last time I spoke with him. Zamorano liked the culture and the coaching staff.

The Spartans’ recruiting class started off slow in terms of commitments, but gained momentum in late April when three-star quarterback Leo Hannan committed, followed by three-star linebacker DJ White. In May, three-star recruits Di’Mari Malone, Emmett Bork and Jace Clarizio committed to the Spartans.

June was a big month for recruiting for the Green and White thanks to a successful series of official visit weekends. Three-star wide receiver Braylon Collier was the first to commit, followed by offensive lineman Drew Nichols. Three-star receiver Charles Taplin of Texas and No. 1 tight end in Michigan Jayden Savoury recently committed.

Mullins is the tenth player to sign for the Spartans. Important players such as Brad Fitzgibbon, Darius Afalava and Aydan West have to make decisions soon. The number of signings could increase sooner rather than later.
