Strawberries have strong symbolism and are featured prominently in the Fraser clan crest. Historians even tell us that the family name comes from “fraises,” the French word for strawberries. Jamie explains it all to Claire: “The white flowers represent honor and the red fruit represents courage—and the green leaves represent perseverance.” Based on the classic Lemon Drop, this recipe uses basil leaves instead of strawberry leaves to elevate the formula beyond the ordinary.

Named after Claire’s signature swear word, this drink actually has something to do with FDR himself, who enjoyed more than a few sips on the frequent boat trips he took to improve his health during his presidency. With 3 full ounces of rum, this isn’t a juice cleanse, but you might end up cursing in sheer joyful surprise. Like many tropical-style drinks, more than one type of rum is used to create a complex flavor, while the sipping technique stirs and chills the liquid without excessive dilution.

Style: Tropical

1½ ounces AGE DARK RUM (or refine the taste with a long-aged pot-still rum)

1½ ounces AGED GOLD RUM

1 ounce FRESH PINEAPPLE JUICE

1 ounce FRESHLY SQUEEZED LIME JUICE

1 ounce VELVET FALERNUM (a sweet liqueur flavored with lime, clove and ginger, essential for many tropical drinks)

3 dashes ANGOSTURA BITTERS

3 dashes of HERBSAINT (or alternatively another aniseed spirit such as Ricard or Absinthe)

1 slice of lime or pineapple to garnish

Add all ingredients to a tall glass and fill with crushed ice. Use a cocktail stick or long bar spoon to swirl the drink by placing the spoon in the bottom of the glass and then rotating it between your palms while pulling it up and back down. Top with more crushed ice if needed and garnish with a lime or pineapple slice – or even a cocktail cherry, paper umbrella, plastic delicacy whale, toy boat, or whatever.

The origin of the stones of Craigh na Dun and their magic remain mysterious, but the stones are an essential part of the story. They serve as a metaphor for the “attraction” of love despite the distances of time and space, the desire to find a home, and that special family – the Frasers – surviving the convoluted course of several centuries. Glasgow bartender Jack Jamieson created this stone circle based on the Manhattan, a primordial cocktail if ever there was one, whose exact origins are also shrouded in mystery.

Style: Modern

1 ounce peated single malt Scotch whiskey

1 ounce RYE WHISKEY

1 ounce SWEET VERMOUTH

½ ounce GLAYVA (see note)

2 dashes of CHOCOLATE BITTER

2 dashes PEYCHAUD’S BITTERS

1 wide orange peel for garnish

Place all ingredients in a mixing glass half filled with ice and stir. Place a large ice cube in a whiskey glass and strain the drink over the ice cube. Flambé the orange peel over the drink (see note below on flambéing the citrus peel).

Remarks: Glayva, a whisky liqueur very popular in Scotland with a mandarin, honey and spice flavour. If it is not available in your area, crush a piece of fresh mandarin in the mixing glass before adding the other ingredients. You can also use another liqueur with a similar flavour, such as Bénédictine or Dry Curaçao.

To flambé orange peel, cut a large, wide slice of the peel, light a match, and position the peel with one hand so that when you squeeze it, the squeezed oils shoot through the flame before landing on the surface of the drink. Drop the squeezed peel into the drink. This technique is particularly spectacular in low light!
