Chris Redd really, really wants you to watch his new car show

Chris Redd had his hilarious moments during five seasons on NBC’s Saturday Night Live. Redd as Obama. As Kanye West. As the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. Redd on game shows, in a giant diaper, on Weekend Update. He’s a really talented, hilarious guy. But what does he know about cars?

As it turns out, it wasn’t so much. And that’s exactly what makes his new car show a curiosity.

The first complete season of Netflix Revived ridesconsisting of eight 40-minute episodes, out July 24th – a new reality comedy about car makeovers, produced by the same team that brought us the meme-worthy “Pimp My Ride” 20 years ago. I called Redd and gave him a chance to convince us to watch.

HOW “RESURRECTED RIDES” CAME ABOUT

Redd: It was offered to me. I wasn’t keen on looking for something in the reality TV show style, but I love cars and I love Pimping up my car. I just wanted to do something, you know, help people, not put ridiculous fish tanks in people’s cars. I wanted to help people and modify their cars in a way that was awesome and functional at the same time. And then I wanted it to have a little bit more comedy.

It ended up being something so different that I thought, yeah, this could be my own version of it. And I trusted Mike (producer Mike Odair), who is a beast at making shows like this. So it came together and when we turned the first car around, I thought: oh man! this shit is crazy! I want the world to see this.

I think you should check it out. That’s all I have to say about it.

WHO IS IN THE SHOW

Redd: These ladies and gentlemen came together to work with each other and we became one big family. They came from shops all over the country and are much more famous in their fields than I am. We brought all these people to LA from different parts of the country. Texas. Utah. They are geniuses. It was an honor to meet them, work with them and learn from them.

This isn’t a show where I pretend to know everything about cars. I’ve been honest about how little I know about cars. It was really my job to bring the car and then put the work on these talented people and then take all the glory. (Laugh) Their work is brilliant. There are different approaches to building and modifying cars, and that’s what makes the show so entertaining: seeing all these people working together to create something new.

IS THE SHOW FUNNY?

Redd: I think so, man! I cracked a lot of jokes. We did a lot of improv. We did a few pranks that I think are hilarious. I love comedy and that’s what I do.

I wasn’t there for the final edit, so I don’t know which jokes didn’t make it. Some jokes couldn’t possibly have made it. Why? Because I’m a dirty man with a dirty mouth! (Laugh) I had to be constantly reminded that we were doing something of a family show. We laughed the entire time we were there.

Redd’s ultimate dream car? A Lincoln Town Car Restomod.

What is the show really about?

Redd: I prank these people and take their car. It’s great because I like stealing things. (Laughter) Then we wreck their car and tell them we’re going to fix it. I couldn’t have predicted the cars if I tried. Cars from all over the place, cars from different time periods. There are cars on the show that you would never get caught in, and then you see what we do to them and you think, “Yeah! I would drive that.” It’s all kinds of things. For example, we had two vans. When they came in, they were ugly. And when they came out, they looked real. That was the first time I wanted to own a van, and I saw how much we had put into it.

IS CHRIS REDD A CAR NERD?

Redd: I’ve always been obsessed with fancy cars, vintage cars, even newer race cars, but I could never afford a dream car. I always dreamed of having one. So basically everyone on the show is living the dream that I never had. I’ve always had something like a 1999 Altima or a 1999 Mitsubishi Galant. I never got into the 2000s with my cars.

My ultimate car would be an old-school Lincoln Town Car or an old-school Cutlass, with a new interior, but with everything back to original on the outside. So when it takes off and goes crazy fast, people say: Where does it come from? When I arrive, I want to look like I’m from the future, but also from the past. I just want to confuse mother (beep) If I arrive.

“Resurrected Rides” comes from the same people who brought us “Pimp My Ride,” but with all new faces.

The funniest person he ever worked with

Redd: Ah! I’ve worked with a lot of funny people, man. I would say Will Ferrell is one of the funniest people I’ve ever worked with. Eddie (Murphy) was super funny. There were so many people and I think I would have to name every single one of them. But there are some people that are just naturally funny in any kind of conversation you have with them. Will is definitely that guy.

CHRIS REDDS LAST WORD

Redd: This show is really cool. We make people cry in a great way, help them in their lives, and talk shit. I think you should watch it. And that’s all I have to say about it.
