“Furiosa”: Chris Hemsworth announces start of filming for “Mad Mad: Fury Road” prequel

Production has begun on “Furiosa,” the long-awaited prequel to Charlize Theron’s 2015 blockbuster “Mad Max: Fury Road.”

Chris Hemsworth, who will reportedly play the main villain in the post-apocalyptic action film, announced the news on Wednesday with a Twitter post that read: “A new journey in the Mad Max saga begins #FURIOSA.”

Starring Anya Taylor-Joy as the younger version of Theron’s Imperator Furiosa, the film will follow the protagonist before her time as a war captain. In addition to Hemsworth, Tom Burke and Angus Sampson have been added to the cast. Nathan Jones – who played the youngest son of arch-villain Immortan Joe (Hugh Keays-Byrne) Rictus Erectus in “Fury Road” – will return to his role.

The fifth installment in the Mad Max franchise, which began in 1979 with Mel Gibson in the lead role, was directed, produced and co-written by George Miller, who also directed the four previous chapters. Gibson passed the torch to Tom Hardy after three films playing Max Rockatansky, a police officer in a war-torn and resource-poor future Australia. Furiosa appears in the fourth film as one of Immortan Joe’s lieutenants who clashes with other street fighters when she helps his five wives escape.

A fifth “Mad Max” film, subtitled “Wasteland,” is already in the works, in which Hardy will reprise his role. No release date or further details have been announced for the “Fury Road” spin-off.

“Furiosa” is currently scheduled to premiere on May 24, 2024. In the meantime, Miller has another film – “Three Thousand Years of Longing” – coming to theaters this year. The trippy romantic fantasy film, starring Tilda Swinton and Idris Elba, premiered at this year’s Cannes Film Festival and will premiere on August 31.
