Rare 200th Anniversary Quarter Dollar Is Worth Nearly $20,000 – And 7 More Worth Big Money

People of a certain generation will remember the year-long bicentennial celebration of 1976, when the United States celebrated its 200th birthday.^th birthday and the country was literally drowning in a flood of trinkets, collectibles, souvenirs and other 200th birthday items to spend money on.

The U.S. Mint also produced a series of Bicentennial quarters to commemorate the event—and many of them are fetching large sums of money today, just before the 250th anniversary of the U.S. president.^th Birthday.

The Mint produced the Bicentennial coins as a special edition between 1975 and 1976. They were the first U.S. quarter dollar coins in over 50 years to feature a special reverse design.

The most valuable of these coins – a very high grade 1976-S Bicentennial Silver Quarter – sold for $19,200 at auction a few years ago, according to the Chronicle Collectibles website. But that’s not the only Bicentennial Quarter to fetch a high price. Many others do, too.

Most of these coins were “clad,” meaning they were made of several metals, such as nickel, copper and zinc, layered together like a sandwich, according to the U.S. Mint. But as Chronicle Collectibles found, some of the Bicentennial quarters were made of 40% silver – an important distinction since the silver coins are rarer and therefore much more valuable.

The condition of the coin also influences its value. Coins in flawless condition achieve the highest prices.

The 200th Anniversary quarter dollars were struck at three different locations in different denominations: Philadelphia (809,784,016 coins), Denver (860,118,839 coins), and San Francisco (11,000,000 uncirculated 40% silver coins, 7,059,099 clad proof coins, and 4 million 40% silver proof coins).

• 1976-D Clad DDO Bicentennial Quarterly Business Strike: Sold in 2023 for $8,400.

• 1976-D Clad Bicentennial Quarter Regular Strike: Sold in 2017 for $6,463.

• 1976-S Clad Proof Bicentennial Quarter Coin: Sold in 2010 for $6,038.

• 1976-S Silver Proof Deep Cameo Bicentennial Quarter Coin: Sold in 2007 for $2,760.

• 1976 Clad Bicentennial Quarter Regular Strike: Sold in 2023 for $1,821.
