Torey Lovullo is sent off in the Diamondbacks’ series-opening loss to the Royals

Bobby Witt Jr. and the Kansas City Royals beat the Diamondbacks 10-4 in Kansas City on Monday night, and things were heated to say the least.

The Royals won the game in the fourth inning when they scored four runs. Arizona starter Yilber Diaz has been strong in his two major league starts. In his major league debut on July 8 against the Atlanta Braves, he pitched six innings, allowing four hits and one run. He repeated that stat on July 13 against the Toronto Blue Jays.

But Monday night was a different story for Diaz than the previous two. He was pulled from the mound in the fourth inning, allowing nine hits, seven runs and one walk without any strikeouts. Diaz finished the night with a 5.40 ERA. Manager Torey Lovullo brought Miguel Castro out of the bullpen, but Castro gave up a three-run home run from Witt Jr., making the score 8-3.

Castro allowed two hits and two runs in two innings.

The Diamondbacks fell to one game over .500 (51-50).

Witt Jr. hit a triple in the first inning, a double in the third and a home run in the fourth, scoring three runs. As he was at bat in the sixth inning, Humberto Castellanos of the Diamondbacks hit him with a pitch.

In the seventh inning, Cole Ragans of the Royals hit catcher Gabriel Moreno. The umpires warned him, but that didn’t seem to satisfy Lovullo. He continued to protest and was ejected from the game.

Second baseman Ketel Marte hit his 20th home run of the season, scoring two of the Diamondbacks’ four runs. Centerfielder Alek Thomas hit a double in the third inning, scoring Kevin Newman.

In the eighth inning, Eugenio Suarez hit a sacrifice fly to bring home Christian Walker, who had two hits, but it was far from enough for the Diamondbacks to win.

The Royals had three home runs and scored 15 hits, while the Diamondbacks had eight hits.

Arizona will look to even the series on Tuesday at Kauffman Stadium.
